The Recipe for 12/12/18

Pick of the Week (PotW):

Electric Warriors #2 reminded me of the typical Shonen tournament arc in terms of its premise. Fortunately, its execution by Orlando, Foreman, and Hi-Fi sets it on the level of My Hero Academia (which had substantial character development and growth). We learn a bit more about Kana and Ian as well as the deep stakes of the overall tournament.  I am curious about the Firestorm who is involved and how powerful he is to keep some many races in check.

Coulda Been A Contender (For PotW):

Hawkman #7 revealed Katar’s full connection to the Deathbringers.   Found it interesting that Katar still had a spark of nobility/honor despite his position in that past life.  It takes true strength of character to reject that authority and resist the seduction of power.

Birthright #34 revealed what happened to Mickey’s betrothed, confirmed the true source of magical power, and the cost of magic.  The readers gain a full understanding of Mickey’s fear of magic and why he would seek to destroy it.  It also explained why powerful magic users are so casual and numb to the pain they inflict on others.

Worthy Mentions:

Doctor Strange – The Best Defense/Silver Surfer – The Best Defense #1 intrigued with the seamless blending of superheroes and the Sergio Leone western vibe.  The Silver Surfer portion reminded me of Firefly and a dash of Cowboy Bebop.  I wished both stories were longer (felt like they finished before I could gorge myself on their blended goodness).  I must say I need more Jason Latour artwork in my life (developed an appreciation for it through Southern Bastards).

Mr. & Mrs. X #6 continues to add a fresh coat of paint to the tried and true Remy and Anna Marie tale.  It was nice to see the infamous NoLa Guilds make an appearance after so long.  Definitely dug the David Lopez art on this issue.  He along with Pepe Larraz have become my preferred X-Artists.

Justice League Dark #6 offers Bobo an opportunity for redemption and a means to escape his mystical responsibilities.  I also dug how Blue Devil walks that fine line between Hollywood Era Wonder Man & Hellboy without blatantly copying either.

Feeling Some Type of Way:

Nada for this week

The Meh Pile:

Uncanny X-Men #5 continues to be exceedingly boring…
