The Recipe for 1/9/19

Pick of the Week (PotW):

Die #2 revealed the roles each of the characters played in the fantasy world and how they managed to escape.  We also get an inclination of how warped Sol has become after being trapped in that Tolkien nightmare for 30 years.  Angela appealed to me the most because she is a walking blend of genres, a cyberpunk hacker inhabiting a D & D world.  Chuck reminds me of Chase Stein and Ganke in that his buffoonery masks his brokenness/scars.  Part of me can see Ash choosing to stay behind in the end to make amends to Sol.

Coulda Been A Contender (For PotW):

Birthright #35 showed us when Mickey finally broke and accepted the savage nature of Terrenos.  We also learned the final fate of Zoshanna and the devastating consequence of magic.  I still wonder how Lore and the mages are able to wield it so freely without being consumed by it.  The ending and resolution of a few threads were completely unexpected.

Young Justice #1 captured the light hearted wonder of the original series.  Glad to see Bart, Connor, and Tim together again but I wonder where this story is actually taking place and will continuity will be reconciled.

Worthy Mentions:

Justice League #15 reminded me of the Justice League Unlimited animated series due to the John Stewart Green Lantern, Hawkgirl and Martian Manhunter taking center stage.

Outer Darkness #3 continues that Star Trek set in the Event Horizon universe vibe.  It is interesting how the occult and super science is blended so seamlessly, almost like the next logical step from Hellboy’s occult science themes.

Murder Falcon #4 is all the proof I need that this book needs to be optioned as an animated series (preferably on Adult Swim or Netflix).  That sweet upgrade reminded me of a mix of the Death Scythe & Wing Zero Delux Gundam models (yes I was that type of nerd as well).

Thor #9 shows us Agent Solomon’s explosive first mission as an Agent of Wakanda. Part of me wished that T’Challa had recruited Nick Fury Jr to be an agent as well since he is more manageable yet equally as capable as his father.

The Unexpected #8 was the finale to a series that had so much potential and demonstrated such an inventive and unexpected defeat for Mandrakk.

Avengers #12 featured a werewolf astronaut battling vampires in space… that alone is worth the price of admission! Avengers is reminding me of Aaron’s Wolverine & the X-Men run with the quirky & bizarre scenarios that unexpectedly work.

Feeling Some Type of Way:

Nada for this week

The Meh Pile:

Uncanny X-Men #9 bored me to tears.
