The Recipe for 7/25/18

Picks of the Week:

Descender #32 provided a satisfying conclusion.  I must give the creative team huge props for making Driller such a fully fleshed out character. It was very interesting how the end had elements of Book of Revelation in it i.e. massive lost of life, and the chosen being raptured. It was touching to see that the bond between Tim-21 and Andy was strong until the very end. It’s a pity to see this tale end but I am looking forward to the next chapter.

Justice League Dark #1 seriously had me at an immortal crime-solving primate. Traci almost feels like a DeeDee to Bobo’s Dexter. I am slightly surprised that angels and demons are working with the magic users, always thought that their abilities were at a different level/had a different nature. It was nice to see Man-Bat in control of his mind for a change and was enduring that he wanted to make up for his bestial transgressions.  His narrative reminds me of Lizard’s; Connors is also working to atone for his past crimes as well. The original owners of magic has a lot of potential. IMO, DC is handling the magical apocalypse concept better than Marvel did. The threat feels potent in this book and there’s also a great sense of urgency as well with magic backfiring and destroying the users.

Marvel Two-In-One #8 cemented the fact that although Ben & Johnny aren’t biologically connected , they are indeed family. It was also interesting to see how they were coping since they were stranded in the Battleworld dimension. I am curious to see if Doom will eventually retrieve them and if their story will resolve neatly before the Fantastic Four relaunch.

X-23 #2 continued the parallels between Three-In-One and the Howlett Sisters. Both pairs were willing to go to great lengths for their loved ones.  I am curious to see how this arc unfolds but seeing how it is X-Men, I doubt the Cuckoos will face any lasting consequence since X-Folk seem to pull a heel turn every other month.

Multiple Man #2 continues to be a present surprise. The Mouth of Minoru line was worth the price of admission.  I wonder if this means Jamie has a baby somewhere in the present or does the usual X-Men Time Travel madness come into play.

Worthy Mentions:

Sentry #2 felt like an inversion of the corruption of Kid Miracle Man with the last panel. I give the creative team kudos for making such a compelling story with such an OP character.

Teen Titans #20 made me chuckle abit with how much of Bruce is truly in Damien. Like his dad, he might not kill you but he would put you through punishment that made you wish for death. The current line-up has promise (Roundhouse and Crush are the most interesting at the moment).

Action #1001 introduced Red Cloud who should pose a sufficient challenge for Sups before he properly accesses her abilities. After that she will become an annoyance like a Metallo or Parasite.

X-Men Blue #32 reminds us that Hell has no fury like Magneto scorned. Found it interesting that Hank still access to his mystical Beast form.  Would be interesting to see if somehow the past and present X-Men get integrated into one like Teen Tony Stark was after Heroes Return.

Mr. & Mrs. X #1 was a delight that in the sense that Remy is consistently opportunistic and takes advantage of a situation.  Cerise was definitely a blast from the past and curious to find out why the Imperial Guard has her captive.

The Terrifics #6 continues to be the best current Fantastic Four book.  It looks like “Ben” has been cured again but I am curious to see how long that lasts.  I do miss “Rexamorpho” tho.

The Silencer #7 continues to be a consistently entertaining book. Cradle and Grave remind me of Styx and Stone for some reason.
