A+X #2 Advanced Review

Black Widow + Rogue
Writer/Penciler/Colorist:  Chris Bachalo

Iron Man + Kitty Pryde
Writer:  Peter David
Artist:  Mike Del Mundo

I may be too hard on A+X.  I keep saying that I do not see a purpose for this book to exist, except to be an easy money grab off of the Avengers vs. X-Men event.  But perhaps I am putting too much thought into it.  As the recap page suggests, I should turn my brain off and not worry where these stories take place in continuity.  The A+X stories are meant to be standalone adventures starring an Avenger and an X-Man.  Easy enough for readers to pick up and read no matter what the numbering is.  After I reread A+X #2 with this in mind, it became more enjoyable.

Black Widow and Rogue team up to fight Sentinels, while Iron Man and Kitty Pryde face off against the Brood.

What I Liked

Plenty of humor to be found in A+X.  With every comic taking itself so seriously nowadays, its nice to have a book that makes you laugh.  Plus the stories are setup so they do not require much backstory.  Introduce the main characters, let them solve a problem.  Cut and paste.  Of the two stories, I enjoyed the Iron Man/Kitty Pryde the best.  Peter David was very creative in how he got the Brood involved.  Plus Mike Del Mundo’s art was easier to follow than Chris Bachalo’s (more on that below).  David’s version of Tony Stark was on point.

What I Didn’t Like

I have normally been a fan of Chris Bachalo’s art, but his recent work has been hard to follow.  The action scenes in his Black Widow/Rogue story were confusing.  I couldn’t tell what was happening.  Maybe it was the coloring.  Also, since when do Avengers complain about a day off?  You’re an Avenger 24/7.  When duty calls, get to avenging!

A+X is a title I would not go out of my way to collect.  However, if you are a fan of titles that you can pick up and read without needing to know any subtext, then A+X is for you.  Next issue teams Hawkeye with Gambit (both recently stars of their own solo books), and Black Panther with his ex-wife, Storm.  I’m already looking forward to issue three.
