The Recipe for 7/11/18

Picks of the Week:

Exiles #5 finally presented a version of Kang who isn’t a hopeless loser despite his access to time travel and future technology (kudos to the creative team).  The creative team are apparently Kamala & Bruno shippers.  The death was completely unexpected and caught me off-guard, felt the character had more mileage.  Apparently, the beings of Lil Wolvie’s reality are immortal in addition to being cute and adorable.  I wasn’t expecting to see a former Exile in this issue either but it was a nice reunion.  Seeing the classic Nick Fury made me wish that he still existed in this form in 616.

Hawkman #2 pleasantly surprised me with a Khufu that actually looked Egyptian.  It also confirmed for me that Indiana Jones with Wings is the best way to tell Carter Hall’s tale.  I also love the interaction between current & past lives.  Hitch hasn’t lost his touch at all, the panels actually look more epic than his Ultimates work.

x-23 #1 was a delight.  Honey Badger continues to be a welcomed addition to Wolverine mythos.  After completing the issues, the 3 in 1’s design made perfect sense.  Glad to see them back in the forefront because they have been MIA for far too long.

Worthy Mentions:

Amazing Spider-Man #1 makes me wonder why Peter being a perpetual loser and plagued with bad luck makes sense to the Powers-That-Be.  Must admit having Boomerang as a roommate, Dr. Connors as his professor, and a reunion between MJ & Pete are pretty interesting (worth the price of admission).

Ms. Marvel #32 made me chuckle at how much of a joke Shocker truly is.  Glad that Bruno and Kamala were able to patch things up.  Bruno’s hypothesis about her powers was intriguing because she doesn’t shunt mass to an extradimensional force to shrink or absorb mass from an extradimensional source to grow like other size-shifters.

X-Men Blue #31 reminded me that Lorna & Alex’s relationship is just as complicated and problematic as Anne Marie & Remy’s relationship.  Curious to see how this Magneto arc plays out.  I also wonder how is Storm a daywalker ?

Darth Vader  #18 proved to me that a Star Wars horror movie could work especially with Vader playing the role as the unstoppable monster.

Farmhand #1 definitely nailed the eerie and creepy atmosphere but not in an off-putting way.  The imagery has an extra Junji Ito vibe, especially scene with the farm tour.

Feeling Some Type of Way:

Sideways #6 didn’t expect the creative team to follow that specific trope.  A bit disappointed because that move felt unnecessary.

The Meh Pile:

Nothing that loathsome or odious this week.
