The title of the first event in the DC Rebirth era is Justice League vs. Suicide Squad, and that’s what we get in issue #2. The two heavyweight teams come to blows, and the results aren’t as one-sided as one would immediately believe. Each team pairs up, with some being obvious and others not so much. It was fun to watch Harley Quinn fight/annoy Wonder Woman.

DC is going all-out for this event by bringing in their best artists, and here we are blessed with Tony S. Daniel, Sandu Florea, and Alex Sinclair. The trio is the current artistic team on Justice League so the transition to including members of the Suicide Squad is flawless. There are a couple of splash pages and two-page spreads that are eye-opening and show the intimidation factor of the Suicide Squad’s handler, Amanda Waller.

Joshua Williamson has a large cast to juggle storywise, but it doesn’t feel complicated. This was a fear of mine because I’m not familiar with the villains he is recruiting, aside from Lobo. It is clear they all were former inmates of Belle Reve penitentiary but did this occur during the New 52 or previous continuity?

I was proud of myself for noticing a very small panel between Maxwell Lord and Lobo which might have shown Lord’s mind-control abilities at work. It’s the little things like this that make reading comics enjoyable.

Just when it looks like the fight between the teams is coming to an end, Williamson throws a curveball at readers. This helps extend the story, which is necessary to hit the six issues that are solicited for the miniseries.

Final Rating: 3 out of 5
