“The Summer of Valiant” begins with Quantum and Woody #1.  They have the moniker of the “world’s worst superhero team” and during this introduction issue, you see glimpses of how they earn that name.  If you’re new to the world of Valiant, this is a great book to test the waters with.  We get Eric (Quantum) and Woody’s origin, and the opening story arc is setup.

What I Liked

There is so much to like in this issue.  James Asmus does a wonderful job of weaving a comedic tale between the brothers.  It’s fun and lighthearted, which is a welcome change from the more serious comics out today.  The story is straightforward and very reader-friendly.

Tom Fowler and Jordie Bellaire make a nice artistic team.  Bellaire’s colors to Fowler’s art really made reading the book a joy.  I am not familiar with Fowler’s previous work, but now I am interested in seeing what else he has worked on.

I also like that as much as Eric and Woody fight throughout the issue, the overall theme is family having each other’s back.

What I Didn’t Like

Only small gripes to point out, but just like in every pairing, there has to be one goofball and one super-serious character.  Eric is straight-laced while Woody is the troublemaker.  It makes for a great dynamic between the two, but it’s nothing we haven’t seen before.  The same can be said for the white/black team-up.

At the end of the book we see how the pair gain their powers.  In the final scene it looks like Eric is missing parts of his shoulder, but that may have been from the coloring.  It is very hard to tell.

Hopefully this Valiant duo will carve out their own niche in the universe, separate from Valiant’s other team of Archer & Armstrong.  I also wonder how much Quantum and Woody will crossover into the other Valiant titles.

Summary

I’m excited to see where Asmus takes the “world’s worst superhero team”.  Valiant has a nice stable of books, and a lot of them are beginning new story arcs.  “The Summer of Valiant” is trying to be accessible to new readers.  So give Quantum and Woody #1 a try.  Afterall, we still need to find out how the goat becomes involved in all this!
