What is the GWA?

A  long time ago (in the 80’s) two young lads (myself and my brother Timdogg) used to collect and play with action figures.  The favorite action figure line at the time was G.I. Joe:  A Real American Hero.  Our favorite weekly shows to watch were WWF and WCW professional wrestling shows.  One day my brother decided to play out wrestling scenarios/angles using his GI JOE figures.  He kept their names the same but he may use an angle he saw with Ric Flair or Hulk Hogan and use action figures to play it out.  The federation was named G.W.A or the G.I. Joe Wrestling Alliance (pretty clever—huh).

Anyway I will try to remember things from the federation that was pretty unique.  Keep in my mind that Tim and I were heavily influenced by the N.W.A. when we were creating this world.  Let me also preface this by stating we did not have many Joes to work with due to the fact that most either were broken or damaged but we did what we could.

G.W.A.—A Brief History…

Main Eventers—

Crazy Legs—Believe it or not Crazy Legs was the main baby face for the promotion and a seven time GWA World Heavyweight Champion.  He was of course a high flyer that dazzled his many fans.  His finishing maneuver was the moonsault.  His main rival was…

Serpentor—Yes the Cobra Emperor was the top heel for the company.  He also was a comedic foil for many other things as well.  He was a 19 time world champion who lied, cheated, and stole several victories from the faces in the company.   His finishing move was the DDT and submission hold was the figure 4 leglock.  He led his own 4 horsemen like stable named—The Four Horsemen (what imaginations we had).  Unfortunately I can’t remember all of the members but the Enforcer for the group was…

Road Pig—This enforcer always stood at ringside for the group’s matches.  He always carried around the brick on a stick which he used often to guarantee victories for his team.  Road Pig would be considered a superheavy weight.  He often faced off against…

Super Trooper—This mail away figure was the baby face superheavy weight of the promotion.  The Trooper shocked the world by winning the GWA World Heavyweight Championship in his first match.  Even though he was not champion for long he had a strong career capturing the US and Intercontinental championships.

Other Alumni

Battle Armor Cobra Commander—Yes, fang face was a prominent opponent to Crazy Legs as well.  The Commander came close on many occasions to winning the world heavyweight championship only to fall short.

Tiger Force—This was actually a heel group featuring the Tiger Force figure of Frostbite with Lightfoot as his partner.  I know Lightfoot wasn’t part of Tiger Force but he fit the color scheme.  This team was patterned after the Midnight Express (Sweet Stan & Beautiful Bobby—Not Dennis sorry).  They were multiple time US and World Tag Champions.   They often aided Serpentor and his cronies.  Finishing move a double team guillotine leg drop.

Downtown—Downtown is known as the first G.W.A competitor to Win the Cycle.  He won the US Championship and while holding that championship won the Intercontinental title and then won the World Belt.  His finishing move was the Hurricarana.  He was the Blue Chipper of the Fed.

Slice & Dice—Heel Tag Team Champions who at one point were a part of Serpentor’s Horsemen faction I believe.

Ninja Force—Any combination tag team of  Snake-Eyes, Storm Shadow, T’jabang, Nunchuk, etc.

The Vipers—Alley Viper ,H.E.A.T . Viper, and Night Viper had their own mini stable.

Hit & Run—This babyface was a technical marvel and high flyer.  He had a short rivalry with Serpentor and defeated him on a couple of occasions for the G.W.A. World Championship.  He also had a friendly series of matches with Crazy Legs.  Hit & Run’s signature move was a top rope splash.

Spearhead—Spearhead was more of a muscle bound athlete in the GWA.  He turned heel a few times.  His finishing move was the Torture Rack backbreaker.  Don’t worry Max wasn’t included.

I thought of Tim playing out angles and I couldn’t help but wonder what it would’ve been like had we had figures that lasted.  What if the G.W.A. was started earlier in the Real American Hero Line?   What would’ve happened had Duke, Hawk, Zartan, Destro, and the boys joined in on the fun?

TO BE CONTINUED?
