Justice League #15 Review “Throne of Atlantis”

Writer:  Geoff Johns
Penciller:  Ivan Reis

Justice League #15 starts a new period for DC’s flagship title.  Premier artist Jim Lee steps aside to give the penciling duties over to Ivan Reis, formerly of Aquaman.    Geoff Johns stays on as writer, to go along with his duties on Aquaman.  Johns now kicks off his crossover of both books, titled “Throne of Atlantis”.

Atlantis is attacked by a submarine and retaliates by attempting to floor heavily populated cities, such as Gotham City and Metropolis.  Aquaman finds himself stuck in the middle of this escalating conflict.  Especially when he is the one behind the Atlantean War Plans.

What I Liked

I’m happy for Ivan Reis getting promoted up to Justice League.  His work on Aquaman has helped change the perception that he is a second-rate hero.  Even with Jim Lee being gone, the quality of the art remains one of the best in DC’s lineup.  The splash pages with Mera, a tidal wave hitting Metropolis, and Superman and Wonder Woman leaping into action help display the “big screen” appeal of what is taking place.

Speaking of Superman and Wonder Woman, we get two quiet scenes with them.  One in Smallville and the other in Metropolis.  The courtship between the two continues, and so far things are going smoothly.

The question comes up of who triggered the U.S.S. Mabus to launch missiles against Atlantis?  Also, for what purpose?  Someone wants to spark a war between Atlantis and the surface dwellers.

What I Didn’t Like

The only downside to this story so far is it is taking place without Green Lantern and The Flash.  Both are presently preoccupied with stories taking place in their solo books.  One positive is it gives individual members of the Justice League more of the spotlight.

Overall this was a good jumping on point for new readers.  “Throne of Atlantis” is the start of a new story arc for Justice League and continues threads started in Aquaman.  Can the Justice League stop Atlantis from declaring war on everyone above land?  The story continues in Aquaman #15.
