Aquaman #15 Review “Throne of Atlantis”

Writer:  Geoff Johns

Inkers:  Art Thibert with Karl Kesel

Letters:  Nick Napolitano

“Throne of Atlantis” started over in Justice League #15 and continues here in Aquaman #15.  The Justice League continues to try and aid cities which have fallen under attack from the ocean, while Aquaman must try and stop the upcoming war.

What I Liked

Paul Pelletier is not a new artist, but he is new to me.  I recently started reading his run on Guardians of the Galaxy from a few years ago.  I was already praising his work from that title.  Now I see him getting the new art chores on Aquaman.  Even with the artist change, the splash pages remain.  Aquaman gets a nice splash page early on as he rescues Commissioner Gordon and Harvey Bullock from a water attack in Gotham.

Aquaman fills Batman in on the stages of the Atlantean War Plans.  Years ago, Aquaman created the war plans in the event that Atlantis was attacked by the surface world.  The first stage is flooding heavily populated cities, then a land attack on the city that has suffered the most damage.  Third stage is to sink a city.  The most surprising discovery is that Aquaman implemented measures to take out Batman, even before the two men had ever met.  This shows the level of respect Aquaman has for Batman, that he knew Batman would need to be taken out because of the level of threat he posed.

As the issues concludes, Aquaman tries to plead with his brother to end this assault.  The rest of the Justice League, listening in on the conversation, interfere and want to take Aquaman’s brother in to pay for his crimes.  Which leaves Aquaman to have to make a huge decision.

What I Didn’t Like

As not a regular reader of Aquaman, it would be nice to learn what Aquaman’s brother is name.  He is referenced as “Orm” once.  I am pretty sure he’s Ocean Master, but I’m not entirely sure.  Also, if Aquaman has war plans in place for Batman, one can assume he has similar plans for Superman and Wonder Woman as well.  Is this another secret he is keeping from the team?

The second part of “Throne of Atlantis” ends with tension between Aquaman and the Justice League.  Will Aquaman side with the League, or will he side with his underwater home of Atlantis?  We should learn more in Justice League #16.
