Uncanny Avengers #2 Advanced Review

Writer:  Rick Remender
Artist:  John Cassaday

The Marvel NOW! flagship title is back with issue two.  We’re still inching closer to the team being fully formed.  Captain America, Thor, and Wolverine discuss the merits of an Avengers/mutant task force, with Havok as the face of the team, while Rogue and Scarlet Witch are held captive by the Red Skull.

What I Liked

A lot happened in this issue, even if it did not include many action scenes.  The story was moved along nicely.  Rick Remender is making sure that everyone knows that humans are back to hating mutants with a vengeance.  There is no better example of this than what happens when various mutants across the globe are watching a news broadcast.

Marvel wants to let the readers know how much the X-Men don’t trust Scarlet Witch.  Rogue is that voice in Uncanny Avengers.  Rogue and Scarlet Witch have a budding rivalry going, but that rivalry does not get in the way of stopping the bad guys (i.e. Red Skull).  Best sequence is when Rogue and Scarlet Witch make a chilling discovery.

I was going to add Red Skull’s “S-Men” under What I Didn’t Like, but here we have a few of their members fleshed out.  At least now they are not Generic Henchman #1 and Generic Henchman #2.

What I Didn’t Like

The image above displays the damage that Avalanche caused in issue one.  The way Remender and John Cassaday orchestrate it, you would think that another Stamford occurred.  For those that don’t know, the disaster at Stamford is what kicked off the Civil War event.  Yes, Avalanche caused a lot of damage, but I have seen much worse done in other books.

So with the death of Charles Xavier, we are to believe that Captain America and Thor are now deeply concerned with human/mutant relations?  It is not like they were ever close to Xavier to begin with.  The explanation of how Red Skull emerges left a lot to be desired.  It was too easy of a plot device to use and not the most creative.

Overall, Uncanny Avengers #2 keeps the ball rolling after #1.  We learn more about Red Skull’s plans, and the Uncanny Avengers team starts to take shape.  They have a mission and a mutual foe to defeat.
