Uncanny Avengers #1 Review

*SPOILER FREE REVIEW*

Artist:  John Cassaday
Writer:  Rick Remender

Uncanny Avengers has been billed as the Marvel NOW! flagship title.  Launching out of the conclusion of Avengers vs X-Men, Captain America vows to do more for the mutant community.  So he decides to incorporate mutants (specifically X-Men) into Avengers teams.  Uncanny Avengers is his first attempt at this.  Cap wants this Avengers unit to be the public face of human/mutant relations.

As the book begins, they are not an official team just yet.  We get small moments with each character, and find out what their thoughts are after Avengers vs X-Men.  As a fan of Rick Remender from his stellar Uncanny X-Force run, I’m pleased that he’s getting to steer this primetime title.  John Cassaday is known from his great Astonishing X-Men work as well.  Cassaday I am not as familiar with.  I never collected Astonishing X-Men, but his art style does not bother me or take away from the story.

What I Liked

This being the first issue of the series, I feel it’s too early to have many likes and dislikes with the book.  However, I enjoyed seeing Havok’s interaction with a certain character before he’s greeted by Captain America and Thor.  Red Skull as a villain is interesting since he historically has not had any beef with the X-Men.  What is his grudge with mutants?  We’ll have to wait to find out as the series progresses.  There is also a HUGE surprise that definitely raises the drama-level of the book.

What I Didn’t Like

After Marvel hyped Uncanny Avengers as being pivotal to the new Marvel NOW!, I would have thought it would be a no-brainer to include Hope as a member.  Especially since Avengers vs X-Men revolved around her and the Phoenix.  I understand the book wanting to focus on six members to begin with, but since Scarlet Witch played a role in the AvX conclusion, why not have Hope be recruited also?

It has already been announced that Havok will be the leader of the team.  I like Havok as a character, but it just seems odd to choose him to lead a team that also includes Captain America.

Nice read. Will have to look into this. this also made me think of a couple of things: 1) Red Skull as the villain right off the bat. Seems kinda of an easy pick given, but makes sense in a way. Red Skull has always held Aryan beliefs, but they’ve long since been down played. Even though he’s never tangled with mutants before that I can remember, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibilities given that Homo Superior flies in the face of what he’s believed. And you could make the case that his greatest enemy teaming with a few of them could stoke him into action. Seems a cheap storyline if it played out like that, but I guess we’ll see the bigger deal soon.

And on Cap wanting to do more for the mutant community part. I find it interesting, in away with a a tie back to history.  Thinking back to shortly after the Avengers were formed and Cap was found, the founding members took a break and Cap was charged to lead a new team. Granted , it consisted of four members, but half of the group were mutants (Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver). Though I don’t remember Red Skull hopping in for a fight around that time.

Oh, as for why Hope is not a member of this team? Keep in mind that this is still the Avengers, the roster tends to change fairly frequently from time to time. Plus, there are probably other plans for her more in the X books, I feel. And Havok as the leader was probably calculated. Good for PR and whatnot, in addtion to Cap being on other Avengers groups and spreading time. Plus, he’s been proven to lead before, so it’s not crazy
…And at least is wasn’t Cyclops.

    • Good explanation of Red Skull’s motives.  This won’t be spoiling anything since this was revealed in interviews, but this is the Red Skull’s conscience from back in the 60’s or whatever time frame he originated from.

I’m hoping Hope joins the team after the initial arc with Red Skull is over.  They’ve said more people will be joining the team as the story moves along.
