Invincible Iron Man #527 Review

*SPOILER FREE REVIEW*

Writer:  Matt Fraction
Artist:  Salvador Larroca

Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca have been paired together on The Invincible Iron Man since July 2008.  I want to say that neither man has missed an issue.  That is an INCREDIBLE achievement in today’s comic book landscape.  Tony Stark has just finished his battled with the Mandarin.  Stark’s left to pick up the pieces of his life while trying to move forward.  But will he be able to?

What I Liked

Even though I have not been following The Invincible Iron Man, I was able to follow the story without getting lost.  The narration explained what has happened without it feeling forced.  It flowed naturally throughout the story.  We know each character’s emotions and where their thought process is at.

I also liked this progression of Tony Stark.  The scientist in him is hungry for more knowledge; to be tested in new ways.  If he stays constant, then his talents will go to waste.

What I Didn’t Like

I’ve always loved Larocca’s artwork and it still holds up today.  However, everyone’s faces look “odd” for some reason.  People criticize Greg Land for photo-copping celebrity faces onto his characters, but it looks like Larocca is doing something similar.  It’s the faces that look peculiar.  It looks like Larocca is putting less effort into them to make them seem distinct.  Everyone looks like a clone of one another.

The Invincible Iron Man may be ending, but the adjective-less Iron Man makes it’s Marvel NOW! debut in November.  Also keep an eye out for Iron Man in various Avengers titles and one other team book.  The Invincible Iron Man is a series I plan on catching up on.  It may take me awhile to read them all, but they will be read.  Stellar work by everyone involved.

  • I’ll have to check this out, especially for what you said about the face manipulation.  I love to see GREAT artwork in comics, but it gets jarring to me when I see a whole lot of photo manipulations trying to mesh with hand drawn art.  It just doesn’t translate all that well.

    • I’ll be curious to hear your thoughts on it.  Just read another review where they mentioned Larocca’s art too, but they blame it on the colorist, which makes sense. I’m big on art in my comics too.  First thing I notice.  Even if a book is well-written, if the art isn’t pleasing to my eye I can’t read it.
