Five #DCYOU Titles End Up On Cancellation Chopping Block

Hearing that some of your favorite comic books are being canceled isn’t the way I like to end a weekend.  That’s exactly what happened Sunday night, as CBR reported on five DC Comics titles being canceled come December.  The Omega Men, Doomed, Justice League United, Gotham By Midnight, and Lobo round out the five.

Also, Catwoman will get a creative team change.  Writer Genevieve Valentine is out, and in is writer Frank Tieri and artist Inaki Miranda.

As far as books I was currently reading, The Omega Men  and Doomed will be missed.  Doomed came out of nowhere and surprised me with its stellar introduction of a young man infected with the Doomsday virus.  It had shades of Miles Morales/Ultimate Spider-Man.  The Omega Men was a political thriller guest-starring former Green Lantern Kyle Rayner.

Bleeding Cool had reported that the powers-that-be at DC weren’t happy with recent sales totals.  The word was that a lot of the newly-launched books for #DCYOU were promised 12 issues to tell their stories.  With monetary losses, it seems an audible is being called.

It really is a shame.  DC Entertainment should know that changing a publishing strategy takes time.  There is no way to tell if the new game plan is working if you are already calling some books a failure after three months.  And I say three months, because from the time the cancellations are announced, only three issues have been published.  That is not enough time for a book to find an audience.

Growing up, it was “Make Mine Marvel”.  I hardly ever read a DC comic.  With the #DCYOU I have jumped in and have thoroughly enjoyed their output.  I am actually reading and enjoying Superman comics!  After always seeing him as a boring hero.  I hope that things don’t revert back to the “old ways” for DC, where Batman has to guest-star to help a comic, or a return to tighter continuity.
