The Recipe for 9/12/18

Pick of the Week:

Fantastic Four #2 fully caught us up with what occurred with the Richards family and the Future Foundation after Secret Wars and the defeat.  The pacing is faster than what I come to expect from a Slott book (they tend to be a slow burn with a future payoff).  The abilities diagnosis pronounced upon Franklin by Molecule Man & his father has little weight IMO since he has received similar in the past.  I was also bit surprised by the power scaling that he was given (more powerful than a cosmic being, a viking god, and a gamma fueled rage monster).  Prince Arboro had a clear Namor vibe and hope that he isn’t a throwaway character; would be interesting if he somehow get marooned in the 616 reality.  The Griever definitely presents a major threat especially after the two heavy-hitters she took out.  She seems to be a greater threat than the Dark Celestials and possibly on the same level of the First Firmament.  I am surprised that Eternity or the One-Above-All doesn’t have safeguards to prevent the wanton destruction of realities and potentially the multiverse.

Exiles #8 revealed the fate of Captain Carter and Becky as well as their origins.  I was pleasantly surprised to see Valkyrie’s origins as well.  These Militant Watchers seem to be an inept as their neutral counterparts (luckily for the Exiles).  I am delighted that Nate’s motivations grew beyond  hurt those who hurt me to unity is greater than mere strength and would be interesting to see the man he grows up to be.  Not sure why I thought the Lil Wolvie blurb would have been something disturbingly dark.

Worthy Mentions:

Hawkman #4 continues to be an enjoyable treasure hunt across space and time.

Birthright #31 paints the world a deeper shade of gray with the glimpses of Mastema’s childhood and Lore’s attempt to shelter her from all the evil/chaos of their world.  Like Mikey, you can understand why Kallista threw her lot with Lore, the man who co-wrote her tragedy with Mastema.  The readers also see how much Mastema has matured since her murderous tantrums as a child.

Infinity Wars #3 makes me wonder why most online comic publications overlook the really cool tidbits in this series.  Doopool is another casualty, the combination of cult fave Doop and fan fave Deadpool? I want a Doopool keychain and plush ASAP! Come on, Marvel getitdone!

Runaways #13 felt like an episode of the Hulu series with Nicolina and Alex being a pariah.  The conflict between the elites (Seed of Gibborim) and the misfits is an experience that most can relate to.  My only gripe is the vast difference between Anka+Wilson and LaFuente+Campbell’s art & color styles comes off as a bit jarring.  I am abit surprised that Russell Dauterman wasn’t asked to fill in since his and Anka’s art styles are more compatible.

X-23 #4 enjoyed the parallels in the devotion displayed by the two sets of cloned sisters in their attempts to save their sibling.  I am surprised that the remaining Cuckoos would want to revive Esme with all the chaos she caused the last time.  I wonder if Sophie will somehow end up in Mindee’s head transforming her into the Two-In-One. I wonder how Esme’s return didn’t alert other potent psychics like the Jeans, Betsy, Emma, X or even Quentin.

Weapon H #7 shed some light on how much of an impact Steve Rogers had on the man Clay became and his motivation for becoming a soldier.

X-Men Blue #35 made me wished that teen Warren’s and Hank’s powerups were somehow transferred to their adult counterparts because their enhanced abilities are far cooler than old Warren’s and Hank’s.

MCMLXXV #1 delivered a very kinetic, enjoyable, and oddly familiar tale.  It reminded me of Stranger Things in the sense that it remixes an era that had such a mighty hand in shaping me as a fiction fan.  I wouldn’t mind seeing Serena Williams in a film or show adaptation of this.
