Recipe for 6/7/18

Picks of the Week:

The Unexpected #1 lived up to its name because I didn’t expect the any of what happened during this issue.  The sense of surprise is comparable to the first arc of Milligan and Allred’s X-Force run. Janet Fals definitely has a horrid father and an extremely jacked up origins that reminds me of Orlando & his talented co-conspirators’ Midnighter run.  The Bad Samaritan has all the makings of an interesting & compelling villains. Can’t say much more without spoiling it for you and it’s a book that you must check especially if you dig Orlando’s cape work.

Infinity Countdown #4 was satisfying in the sense that the Lifebringer’s tenure ended to end a great threat.  Ultron can’t go back to being a periodic Avengers pest after he has wreaked so much havoc in the universe.  Surprised that the Gardener’s siblings cared so much about him, they all seemed so consumed with their namesake to be concerned about anything or anyone else.

Immortal Hulk #1 reminded me of that old Fox show, Werewolf. Bruce Banner is once against a drifter (much like Eric Cord) with a huge curse and his other form avenges whatever transgressions/sins he witness before death.  Part of me wished that the Hulk’s form changed to something more ghoulish to suit his new role.  Hill’s punishment also reminded me of the retribution inflicted on a bank robber during the Reign of Supermen.

Worthy Mentions:

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #31 almost choked me to death with the “Smelly Spider-Man” jab hurled at Wade.  Felt like an anti-smoking PSA for a hot minute fortunately it all made sense in the end.  Swarm definitely reminded me that he is a Nazi Scientist villain with his lame scheme.

Justice League #1 intrigued me with the Neanderthal tribes that faced the League.  Wonder what would possess Bruce to plant bombs on the moon and I loved that J’on called him out on it.  Loved the cunning and conniving Luthor at work yet I am not sure what is the Joker’s purpose in this group (outside of being Bruce’s opposite number).

Hunt for Wolverine – Weapon Lost #2 definitely has to be the more interesting of this Wolverine event.  I am curious to see what happens to Doug next issue.  Wonder if the outcome would be the same if Doug was healthy.

Doctor Strange #1 confuses me abit because the impact of the extinguishing of magic on earth seems localized to Dr. Strange.  Mystical beings like Ghost Rider, Thor should also feel the weight as well and shouldn’t curses like Wendigo & vampirism be impacted as well.  I am also surprised that Tony had to be the one that told him to think outside of the box for a solution. Their technology vs magic discussion reminded me of banter between Dr. Venture and Dr. Orpheus.

Deathstroke #32 is a compelling story arc and probably would have more impact if it occurred a few years earlier.  At this moment, it will probably end as another attempt by Talia to mess with Bruce and turn Damien.

Wonder Woman Annual #2 was interesting in the sense that a major villain was introduced in an annual, don’t remember the last time I remember seeing that (then again I am also old and forgetful).  The conflict itself reminded of the Justice League episode with the seemingly invincible enchanted armor that was defeat by peace.  The Star Sapphires overall gave off a shonen vibe in the sense that violence isn’t always the answer for vanquishing evil and love is the answer.

The Meh Pile:

Astonishing X-Men #12 was underwhelming and brings nothing new to the table.
