The Recipe for 5/2/18

Pick of the Week:
Avengers #1 made me wonder how the Avengers can handle such a threat like the Final Host!  All of Asgard barely fazed a Celestial, what can this team do? It seems like a job for the Ultimates, the Illuminati, or a reality warper like Franklin Richards.  I am also curious to find out of Odin sired a child with the Phoenix and if that child is running around somewhere.  It’s a pleasure to see McGuinness’ art again, the way he draw the Asgardians makes me wish that we was drawing a Thor book.  The younger Odin is a far more likable character than the current King Odin who is an insufferable nag.

Captain America #701 is one of the rare moments that there is a smooth art transition.  Leonardo Romero is the perfect candidate to follow Chris Samnee.  Was intrigued the creative team subtly touched on the cultural bias that might emerge from a Kree-Humanity alliance.  The Blue Kree treat the white Kree like second class citizens and they treat humans who resemble their second class citizen in a very similar manner.  Humanity is being bred like cattle to serve as the Kree Empire’s sleeper agents.  It is interesting on one level, that the Kree still have beef with the Skrull in the future, especially since the Skrull Empire is no more.

Worthy Mentions:

Deathstroke #31 would have greater impact if there was a possibility that Slade could be Damian Wayne’s father.  On second thought, it would be an interesting story if Slade was his real father and this causes some nature vs nurture conflict within him.

Green Arrow #40 reminded me of Avengers Next with Ollie playing the role of Old Man Bruce to the resistance.

DC Nation #0 really enjoyed the multiple Justice League teams but I have the same concern that I did with the Avengers.  How will they be able to defeat such powerful foes?

Scales and Scoundrels #9 felt like an inversion of the Little Mermaid animated film.  The creative team definitely crafted an interesting world filled with transforming dragons, elves, and mermaids.

Death or Glory #1 reminded me of No Country for Old Men in the sense that the heroine is way over the head that she’s drowning in trouble.

The Meh Pile:

Nothing that horrid & foul has polluted the pull list.
