The Doktor’s Prescriptions for 4/6/16

detail

Picks of the Week:

Black Panther No. 1

The audience is finally given a more detailed view of Wakanda and the lives of its people outside of the royal family.  It also showed the cracks with Wakandan society, despite being technologically advanced their leadership still adheres to barbaric customs and traditions.  I loved the visual display of advanced technology from T’challa’s suit to the tech bracelets used by the average citizens.

Black Widow No. 3

The Weeping Lion is an interesting villain especially to possess that much leverage over the Widow.  I love how Waid crafted such a scenario where Natasha, one of the most resourceful spies/black operator, would be backed into a wall. Samnee’s art is to-die-for and meshes well with Matt Wilson’s colors. I reread the issue several times to breathe in the colorful and stunning masterpiece.

Darkness: Hope No. 1

This issue is short and sweet. It gave Jackie Estacado so much depth with the end of issue reveal. It reminded me of the heyday of Top Cow. Despite being a mafia hitman & linked to an inescapable dark destiny, he wasn’t a completely horrible person. This issue highlighted his humanity.

Empress No. 1

The NuMillar writing style is thoroughly enjoyable.  Morax is established as a cruel despot yet somewhat decent father based on his response in the last panel and his daughter’s reluctance to leave his side.  Queen Emporia is a brave and strong woman to incur the wrath of such a monster and raise her children in a safe and normal environment.  Dane is more loyal than wise to assist Emporia and go through such lengths to have her plan succeed.

Old Man Logan No. 4

It is awesome to see the strength of Cap’s friendship with Logan.  It would probably easier to put him for good or send him to rot in some jail, but he takes the time to reason with Logan and help him through this crisis.

Spider-Man No. 3

It was such an enjoyable book, it was nice to finally see Miles abuela and their whole family dynamics.  I also loved the interaction between Mies and Kamala.  The addition of a current X-Men to the cast was unexpected yet welcomed.

Vision No. 6

This series gets kudos for making Vision appealing and interesting to me. I previously found the Younger Avengers Vision and Victor Mancha far more compelling.  It is heart breaking to see Vision deal with the Pym Curse.  Unlike his “granddad”, Vision doesn’t abandon his creation/family.  He copes with the horrid situation the best he can. The family dog origin is very creepy.

On the Fence:

Contest of Champions No. 7 gave us Venom Void hybrids and the prelude to an encounter with the Ultimates.

Deadpool No. 9 is a quirky tale especially Wade & Victor stopping their fight when the school bus shows up.

Invincible Iron Man No. 8 feels boring without Doom, Parker is a sad substitute for Doom!

Justice League Darkseid Wars No. 1 provides some insight into Grail’s history and motivation.

Midnighter No. 11 is an action packed thrill ride.

New Avengers No. 9 gave us AIM Voltron vs USA Godzilla.

Poe Dameron No. 1 probably missed points with me since I didn’t watch the film.

Prophet Earth War No. 3 is more Conan in Space adventure.

Saints No. 7 is pretty consistent in terms of content and felt short.

Scarlet Witch No. 5 is the best issue so far IMO.

Spider Women Alpha No. 1 fell  flat.

The Infinity Entity No. 4 seems too long.

The Fix No. 1 felt like a mix of Training Day, The Heist and a stoner film.

Uncanny Avengers No. 8 was a fun issues but left me more confused about Cable.

Nah, Just Nah:

Spider-Man 2099 No. 9 and Uncanny X-Men No. 6 are totally unappealing IMO! They have a fantastic art but the stories are extra flat.  Archangel is slowly becoming as radioactive as Hawkman was in the 90’s.
