Review: ALL-NEW X-MEN #19

Writer:  Brian Michael Bendis
Pencils & Inks:  Brandon Peterson
Colors:  Israel Silva
Letterer:  VC’s Cory Petit
Publisher:  Marvel Comics

Even though the status quo overall for the X-Men changed after Battle of the Atom, for the cast of All-New X-Men all that really changed was their home base.

The original X-Men, along with Professor Kitty Pryde, have joined with present-day Cyclops at the new Xavier School.  After taking last issue to get acquainted with their new surroundings, we now pick up the action.

What I Liked

If you have kept up with solicits, you know there will be another addition to the cast.  Where this character is before All-New X-Men will hopefully be answered.

Brian Michael Bendis’ patent writing is on display here.  Iceman is the jokester, Beast the intellectual, Cyclops the leader and optimist, and Jean Grey the realist.

Choice of villains here is a good one.  Putting the original X-Men against the Purifiers shows a contrasting of beliefs.  Power-wise the Purifiers are someone the X-Men can handle.  But their extreme prejudice and hatred can manifest interesting dialogue between the X-Men team members.

New colorist Israel Silva does a fabulous job displaying reflection in lighting during the nighttime scenes.

What I Didn’t Like

Filling in for Stuart Immonen on art is Brandon Peterson.  Brandon is no stranger to high-profile Marvel projects.  While his art is topnotch, some of the angles and structuring of panels looks off.  Posture was disjointed in places.

Summary

All-New X-Men #19 introduces us to the next new threat, while laying seeds for a change in the team dynamic.  Even with the original X-Men leaving to join Cyclops’s X-Men team, All-New X-Men still keeps its focus on the original five.
