Review: ROCKET GIRL #1

Writer:  Brandon Montclare
Artist:  Amy Reeder

I remember hearing about Rocket Girl through various website interviews with the creative team Brandon Montclare and Amy Reeder.  Rocket Girl involves a 15 year old policewoman from the future (2013 in fact) named Dayoung Johansson traveling to 1986 New York City.  There is a company in the future named Quintum Mechanics that is changing the past, and its up to Rocket Girl to stop them.

What I Liked

The story by Montclare was easy enough to follow.  This can be a tricky thing with a brand new series.  Readers aren’t familiar with the characters or settings.  Montclare introduces our protagonist, Rocket Girl, and also sets up a supporting cast for her in the past and future.

Reeder provides the art and it is glorious.  The colors are bright and vibrant.  She shows great expression through each individual on a page.  I really liked the time-traveling panels and how Reeder displayed time/space distortion using colors.

There is also a mystery of what has Quintum Mechanics changed int he past.  Whatever it is, they are profiting from it in the future.

What I Didn’t Like

Can’t say there was anything I didn’t like.  This was a nice introductory issue.

Summary

Rocket Girl will be a fun series to keep up with from Image Comics.  Time travel stories can be fun if done right.  We have to see what plans Montclare and Reeder have for Johansson as she navigates the mean streets of 1986 New York.
