Review: SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #17

Writer:  Dan Slott
Penciler:  Ryan Stegman
Inker:  Livesay
Color Art:  Edgar Delgado
Letterer:  Chris Eliopoulos

Superior Spider-Man has been on an upward-swing since it launched in January 2013.  Dan Slott has pushed the envelope with each subsequent arc.

After Otto Octavius purged Peter Parker’s spirit from Peter’s body, the event I have been looking forward to the most has been the arrival of Spider-Man 2099.  With the time stream being broken in Age of Ultron, all sorts of time-anomalies are popping up across the Marvel universe.  This create a perfect backdrop for Spider-Man 2099’s introduction.

What I Liked

First up we have Ryan Stegman back on art duties.  The Spider-Man editorial team appears to be saving Stegman for their larger story arcs.  The ones of most importance (i.e. the Otto/Peter mind battle, Spidey 2099).

As a kid I remember purchasing the first couple issues of Spider-Man 2099.  My memory of its history ends there, but that did not take away from my enjoyment of the story.  I especially like how Slott tied the present and future together seamlessly.  It opens up so many possibilities for future stories.

What I Didn’t Like

We only get a small tease of Superior Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 together at the same time.  Of course the big confrontation is saved for next issue.  Only two weeks of waiting!

Summary

During the end of Amazing Spider-Man Slott used Miguel O’Hara as a red herring to fake out fans to the true identity of the Superior Spider-Man.  What we didn’t learn till later was Slott really did have plans to utilized the Spider-Man of the future.

What does Spidey 2099’s connection to the present mean?  What repercussions will come of this?  And will our two heroes work together or destroy each other first?
