Review: INFINITY #3

Writer:  Jonathan Hickman
Artists:  Jerome Opena & Dustin Weaver
Color Artist:  Justin Ponsor
Letterer:  Chris Eliopoulos

In space, the Galactic Council are scrambling to deal with the Builders.  While on Earth, Thanos’ forces are attacking while he awaits a response from the Inhumans on their tribute.

Things may look dire, but our heroes are a resourceful bunch.  The tide starts to turn and a King lets his intentions be known.

What I Liked

Even though reading tie-in books Avengers and New Avengers enhance Infinity, Jonathan Hickman is able to give you just enough exposition to follow what is happening in those books.

Jerome Opena and Dustin Weaver split art on the space/Earth segments.  There are portions to love from both artists’ work.  Opena gets to illustrate different alien species and grand epicness of cosmic beings.  Weaver gets to unleash the fury of Black Bolt in one epic panel.

Seeing Black Bolt cut loose was awesome!  One thing Infinity has done for me is piqued my interest in the Inhumans.  Thankfully Inhumanity will give me plenty of time to get familiar with the royal family.

Another positive is having this story split up between space and Earth.  It gives this massive cast of characters enough room to breath and let their stories be told.

What I Didn’t Like

While I praised Hickman for doing his best to help non-readers of Avengers and New Avengers, to get the full effect of Infinity you really do need to read these tie-ins.  This week’s New Avengers #10 was an exceptional tie-in.  I’m sure its story will be shortened and referenced in next month’s Infinity but I still recommend reading the two Avengers titles.

The rescuing of the captured Avengers team happened way too fast.  More background on this may be explained in other tie-in books, but for the main series it was glossed over rather quickly.

Summary

Infinity #3 was promoted with teaser images by Marvel as having something important happen and all this is true.  By the end, the chess pieces have been moved to kickstart the Inhumanity age for Marvel comics.  The confident Builders have been shown the resilience of our heroes and Thanos has his response from Black Bolt and the Inhumans.
