Review: Guardians of the Galaxy #5

Writer:  Brian Michael Bendis
Art:  Sara Pichelli
Color Art:  Justin Ponsor
Letterer:  VC’s Cory Petit
Consultant:  Neil Gaiman

With the next Marvel event Infinity about to begin, it feels like the story in Guardians of the Galaxy is finally progressing.  Angela, who was introduced at the end of Age of Ultron, shows up to cause some trouble for our team.  Star-Lord, suffering side-effects from the “time-quake” in the Age of Ultron finale, goes seeking answers.

What I Liked

The artistic change from Steve McNiven to Sara Pichelli has gone off without a hitch.  Pichelli’s work on Ultimate Comics Spider-Man was awesome, and that continues here.  I really like Pichelli’s Tony Stark.  We see him in so many monthly books that it’s hard to keep them all straight.  Pichelli’s Stark seems witty and even has a youthfulness to him.

Brian Michael Bendis’ forte’ has always been his dialogue between team members.  Seeing Tony and Rocket Raccoon discussing the negatives of hooking up with Gamora doesn’t come across as wasted space.

Fans of the previous volume of Guardians of the Galaxy will be pleased to see a former teammate make a guest-appearance.  The reason for the appearance has to do with the “time quake” from Age of Ultron.

What I Didn’t Like

There is another big appearance at the end of issue five.  At first glance it doesn’t make sense to me.  Peter Quill is trying to get to the bottom of the “time quake” mystery, but why would this secret person hold the answers?  As far as I know, this person doesn’t possess any time-traveling abilities.  Plus, how does Quill know where or how to find the person?  You’d think they were best friends and have each other’s cellphone numbers saved.

Summary

Guardians of the Galaxy #5 is a pretty good jumping-on point for new readers.  Even though some events have happened in the earlier four issues, the introduction page gives a nice recap, plus there’s the debut of Angela.  This will be the book where her story will be told.

So to end, we have Angela, Age of Ultron fallout, and a special end-of-issue guest-appearance all wrapped up in this comic.  Hopefully the creative team can keep the positive momentum going.
