Freelancers #1 is the first Boom! Studios title I have ever read.  I wanted to broaden my comic book scope, so that involves reading and reviewing books from publishers besides Marvel and DC.  First issues are always a good jumping on point, and the premise for Freelancers sounds appealing.  Cassie and Val grew up together at the House of Little Fortunes Orphanage learning kung fu.  Together they used their unique skillset to become freelancers.  Freelancers fix unusual problems for society’s wealthiest tenth-of-a-percent.  Freelancers report to agents, who set up their jobs.

What I Liked

The relationship between Cassie and Val is a sisterly one.  Since they grew up as kids together, they know each other inside and out.  The dialogue is very well written.  Every day slang is used, and it doesn’t sound hokey or out of place.  The reader is also given a chance to understand Cassie and Val’s personalities.  Cassi is the responsible one, while Val is impulsive.  The “Tiny Fighters” backup story may have been more entertaining than the main story.  Also, good job done of establishing Cassi and Val’s supporting cast and antagonists.

What I Didn’t Like

Only negative thing I can say was that Freelancers #1 was a long read.  I count 33 pages, which is I believe 11 more pages than a standard comic from Marvel or DC.

I will enjoy keeping up with the freelancing adventures of Cassi and Val.  Hopefully Boom! Studios has a future hit on their hands.
