AvX Consequences #5 Review

*SPOILER FREE REVIEW*

Script:  Kieron Gillen
Art:  Gabriel Hernandez Walta

The surprise mini-series AvX Consequences comes to an end with issue five.  I’ve stated in previous reviews how I have enjoyed this book.  It has surpassed my low expectations.  In the finale, we have a resolution to Cyclops’ time in prison, as more chess pieces are moved around on the chess board that is Marvel NOW!

What I Liked

I am glad we get to find out what happens with Cyclops being sentenced to a civilian prison.  It ends about as well as you would expect it to end.  What I liked most overall, is the entire series.  Big events like Avengers vs. X-Men normally don’t afford the opportunity for much character development.  That is where a follow-up series like AvX Consequences comes in.  The writer can afford to take time focusing on individual characters.  In AvX Consequences we get to see this done with Scott Summers, Magneto, Tony Stark, Wolverine, and others.  Plus this leads right into new ongoing titles like All-New X-Men, Cable and X-Force and Uncanny Avengers.

What I Didn’t Like

I was not a fan of Gabriel Hernandez Walta’s art after my initial reading.  It paled in comparison to the work done by Mark Brooks, Scot Eaton, and Tom Raney.  After a second reading, it wasn’t as bad as I originally thought.  Still, it did not leave a good first impression.

It should also be noted how lackadaisical the security for Cyclops was.  In issue one the warden of the prison makes a point to say how Cyclops will be kept in a general population prison.  The reason being it puts Cyclops in danger from all the mutant-haters locked up.  Was any thought put to Cyclops attempting to escape?  You might want to have a stronger defense system in place.

Overall, I’d rate AvX Consequences a 4 out of 5 stars.  Any title that is low on action and can still keep my interest is a win in my book.  I wonder if I would have enjoyed Consequences as much if it wasn’t released twice a month.  Not having to wait to read the story was a huge bonus.  What happens to Cyclops?  Will Hope find Cable?  Make sure to read to find out.

You have a funny definition of “spoiler free”, but I don’t mind. I had no intention of reading this book, yet it seemed like some interesting Cyclops developments occurred in it. I’m glad you delved into that, as it’ll help me better understand the upcoming regular series!

    • Hahaha thanks!  It’s hard to really talk about an issue without, of course, talking about what happens in it.  AvX Consequences really impressed me.  I had no expectations for it, admittedly, but I left liking it.  Except for the art in issue 5.
