WWE SummerSlam Post-Show Breakdown

SummerSlam 2011 is in the books.  Overall a pretty entertaining show.  WWE did what I expected them to do and added extra matches to fill out the card, with a six-man tag match of Rey Mysterio, Kofi Kingston & John Morrison vs The Miz, Alberto Del Rio & R-Truth and Wade Barrett vs Daniel Bryan.

I’m going to focus on the title matches.  Randy Orton won back the World Heavyweight Title from Christian in their No Holds Barred match.  Before the match began Christian brought out Edge to be in his corner.  It was good to see Edge back in a WWE arena.  He was looking good and content with retirement.  Edge let Christian know that he agreed with him on being screwed having to defend the title five days after winning it.  However, Edge didn’t like Christian’s actions since winning the belt back from Orton, and wouldn’t be in Christian’s corner tonight.  I was sure this would lead to Edge somehow helping Christian retain, but alas that was the last we saw of Edge for the night.  Christian and Orton put on an entertaining hardcore-style match.  The finish was epic as Orton RKO’d Christian on the steel ring steps.  Will this be the end of their feud?  If so, Orton can move on to Mark Henry, who laid out Sheamus earlier in the night.

With the backdrop of Stephanie McMahon making appearances backstage throughout the night, John Cena lost to CM Punk in the WWE Title match, with Triple H as Guest Referee.  As Triple H made the three count, Cena had his legs on the rope. Per good guy rules, Cena didn’t argue with Triple H on his ruling and quickly left the ring to let Punk celebrate with the belt. Normally when a wrestler leaves the ring like that, I know it’s because something else is planned to happen.  I was thinking Triple H was going to Pedigree Punk as he raised his arms in victory, but even that didn’t happen.  No, shenanigans took place when Kevin Nash came through the crowd and assaulted Punk, finishing him off with a Jackknife powerbomb.  Then Alberto Del Rio cashed in his Money in the Bank contract to pin Punk and become the new WWE champion.  A lot to take in to end the show.

RAW tomorrow will be must-see television.  How will CM Punk respond to Kevin Nash’s attack?  Since Nash & Triple H are best friends, will Punk blame Triple H?  Was this all Triple H’s master plan all along?  Since John Cena had his foot on the ropes, he technically never lost the matchup.  But since Cena never seems to care about winning or losing titles, I’m sure he’ll laugh it all off like the goober he is.  Whatever happens, KLIQNation will be chiming in with the feedback you’ve come to love about us.  Stay tuned!
