Adventures of Supergirl Chapter 2 Review

ADVENTURES OF SUPERGIRL CHAPTER 2
Writer:  Sterling Gates
Art:  Bengal
Cover:  Cat Staggs
Publisher:  DC Comics

Adventures of Supergirl continues in Chapter 2 as Kara rushes to rescue her sister Alex from a crashing helicopter.  Artist Bengal immediately brings the reader into the drama using unique camera angles.  We go from zooming downward towards the ground, to watching the bystanders looking up in the sky at the action.  We’re experiencing the action from both points of view.

Sterling Gates takes us inside Supergirl’s mind early on.  It’s not often that the history of Krypton is highlighted.  Supergirl remembers her science lessons as a kid and compares them to the lessons she learned on Earth.  I enjoyed that perspective.

Alex and Kara’s relationship is given more page time than in the previous chapter.  Even though the mission comes first, we’re reminded they are sisters.  Bengal displays this by using simple gestures such as a look from one sister to another.  And no matter how much you think you know your sibling, there are always secrets.  The one Alex kept from Kara is integral to the story.

I love the color work in this chapter.  I’m not sure who to attribute the work to.  Perhaps it was Bengal?  Supergirl is filled with hope and is an inspiration for an entire city.  The colors help bring that inspirational feeling out of me.  Even when the action goes underground, the colors change to match the setting.  Darker hues and shadows are prominent.

Let’s not forget the lettering as well.  Explosions and screams are front and center.  They’re made to stand out from the normal speech patterns.

Fans of the X-Men will LOVE that final panel!  It mirrors an iconic image from X-Men lore in a similar setting.
