Pick of the Week – Paper Girls No. 1-2
What I dug: The creators were able to get me invested in a story about paper girls. BKV’s writing + Cliff Chiang’s art + Matt Wilson’s colors + Fletcher’s lettering = magic. The each of the girls has a unique voice and personality. It reminded me of all those 80s coming-of-age films that I watched as a kid.  It had an unexpected yet welcomed horror/sci-fi element.
What I don’t fancy: The cliffhanger… I have to wait 30 days for my answer.

Pick of the Week – Rasputin No. 10
What I dug: The elements of Russian history woven into this narrative satisfies the nerdie historian in me.  It is a refreshing change to see Rasputin in a positive light.
What I don’t fancy: It seemed too short!
Buy or Nah: BUY IT NOW!!!

Black Science No. 17
What I dug: The shift in locale from alternate realities to higher realities/dimension was interesting. It reminded me of Warren Ellis X-Man run with the inclusion of a higher dimension. Didn’t expect the Boogeyman from Grant’s childhood was real, let alone inhabit the higher realm. It makes me wonder how Grant’s mom knew about it.
What I don’t fancy: Waiting a month until I find out what happens next.
Buy or Nah: Buy it!

Casanova Acedia Vol. 1
What I dug: The shift from science-based villains to supernatural villains was refreshing. The twin’s art conveyed some epic moments.
What I don’t fancy: Some of the elements are R, felt that PG 13 would have been fine in their place.
Buy or Nah: Buy!

Citizen Jack No. 1
What I dug: The idea that a politician is literally backed by a sinister supernatural force is interesting. The protagonist feels like an amalgam of the fringe/eccentric Republican candidates in recent years.
What I don’t fancy: The main character doesn’t seem terribly likeable.
Buy or Nah: Buy it!

Copperhead Vol. 2
What I dug: The book reminded me of a grounded version of Bravestarr. I enjoyed the space western setting & curious about the war the characters reference from time to time.
What I don’t fancy: Nada!
Buy or Nah: Buy!

Lazarus No. 20
What I dug: I can best describe this comic as a grounded version of Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid series. It has the action and adrenalin of a FPS & the intrigue and suspense of a spy thriller.
What I don’t fancy: Nada!
Buy or Nah: Buy!

Monstress No. 1
What I dug: The world is visually appealing, the garb and architecture have European aesthetics while creatures looked like the yokai that inhabit popular anime.  Found the role that cats play in this world is unique.  Maika is a compelling character.
What I don’t fancy: Nada!
Buy or Nah: Buy!

Saints No. 2
What I dug: The character interaction felt natural and reminded me of Venture Bros banter. It’s unexpected that the reincarnation of a martyr would be invulnerable.
What I don’t fancy: It was too graphic and jarring for me.
Buy or Nah: Nah!
