Pick of the Week – The Paybacks No. 1

What I dug: The cast was splendid in my humble opinion. I got a visual kick of Bloodpouch, a homage to Liefeld’s art style. The Soviet Nunchuck spotted his one liner at the right time earned the book serious points. At the moment, the Driver is my favorite character. His van reminds me of the A-Team’s van, its Tardis feature was unexpected. The humor and art style reminds me of the Venture Brothers.
What I don’t fancy: Nada! Except the fact that it doesn’t have a late night animated series!
Buy or Nah: BUY IT NOW!!!

Drifter No. 8
What I dug: I loved the setting of the book, the tone, the fight sequences and the art. The colors complimented the art in my opinion. Major kudos to Klein and Dwyer!
What I don’t fancy: Nothing stands out.
Buy or Nah: Buy!

Hellboy in Hell No. 8
What I dug: The cast is star of the book. HB reminds me of Tyrion Lannister. Both are the youngest and most noble member of their dysfunctional and murderous families. They also have scary older sisters that despise them. The Mignola art is always a huge plus.
What I don’t fancy: The waiting is torture.
Buy or Nah: Buy it!

Mantle No. 5
What I dug: Jen’s method for optimizing her powers was unique. The Plague’s just dessert was satisfying to see. The Plague’s reason for villainy was unique as it was cowardly.
What I don’t fancy: The language slightly bugged me because it reminded me of Pam from Archer.
Buy or Nah: Buy!

Morning Glories No. 48
What I dug: The concept is interesting. High School is truly sinister/malevolent and filled with time travel, brain washing, etc.
What I don’t fancy: It might be too layered for a new reader to jump into.
Buy or Nah: It is too much of a slow burn for me. But anyone who loves a good conspiracy should buy it.

Postal No. 7
What I dug: The cast is interesting, found Curtis appealing. He had a certain charisma about him and his advice to Mark about women was spot on IMO. Mark reminds me of Forest Gump for some odd reason.
What I don’t fancy: Nothing stands out.
Buy or Nah: Pick it up

Rasputin No. 9
What I dug: I have found Rasputin interesting ever since I read his story for honors history class almost 20 years ago. I dug the variant of the Koschei the Deathless legend.  Rossmo’s art is a perfect match for the book.
What I don’t fancy: No, real complaint
Buy or Nah: Buy

Revival No. 33
What I dug: The cast is the biggest draw IMO. Glad that it isn’t about zombies. Cripes, I hate zombie!
What I don’t fancy: It might not be an easy book for a new reader to jump into.
Buy or Nah: Buy It Now!

Savage Dragon No. 207
What I dug: Erik Larson’s art is a major draw. The focus has been shifted from Dragon to his son in a more successful manner than Dragon Ball Z’s attempt to replace Goku with Gohan.
What I don’t fancy: It’s a bit too over-the-top, especially the opening scene. Cripes!
Buy or Nah: If you are a long time fan, then buy it.

Sons of the Devil No. 5
What I dug: Travis’s story is more or less an amalgam of the Omen and Rosemary’s Baby.  This book has a creepy vibe and the art definitely helps with setting the tone.
What I don’t fancy: Nothing
Buy or Nah: Buy

Spread No. 10
What I dug: This book reminded me of Slither, the Blob and the Mist.  It’s interesting to see how people adapt or change to survive such hostile circumstances
What I don’t fancy: It might not be an easy book for a new reader to jump into outside of weird bloody creatures attacking and eating people.
Buy or Nah: If you’re a fan, then buy.

Stray Bullets Sunshine and Roses No. 8
What I dug: The crime noir element was the main draw. The art complimented the story.
What I don’t fancy: Nothing
Buy or Nah: Buy
