Hawkeye #8 Advanced Review

*SPOILER FREE REVIEW*

Writer:  Matt Fraction
Artist:  David Aja
Colorist:  Matt Hollingsworth
Letterer:  Chris Eliopoulos

As the cover illustrates, Clint is paid a visit by Penny, who appeared in an earlier issue of Hawkeye.  I believe Clint bought his car from her (the one washed away in the Hurricane Sandy Relief issue).  Penny is in trouble, and the only person she can turn to for help is Hawkeye.  And Hawkeye can’t turn down a damsel in distress.

What I Like

Without giving too much away, the location that Penny meets Clint at to ask for help is priceless!  Especially the fallout from it.  It had me laughing and thinking to myself “This could only happen to Clint Barton”.  Matt Fraction’s writing on Hawkeye is some of the most fun you will find in an ongoing series.  Even Kate Bishop’s cameo appearance is made comical by Fraction.  She makes the most out of her page-time.

I love how David Aja and colorist Matt Hollingsworth incorporate purple into the book.  Hawkeye makes sure to represent his trademark purple in uniform and in civilian clothing.

Even with the laughs, Fraction is progressing the story along.  Things seem to be building to hopefully an awesome climax between Hawkeye and his tracksuit antagonists.  Even some classic Marvel villains are shown to be getting involved.

What I Didn’t Like

Even though it’s fun to watch Clint get himself into more trouble, I have to wonder if this really makes sense for someone who is a member of The Avengers.  Clint has gone from criminal to a leader of The Avengers…..shouldn’t he show more responsibility in his personal life?

Summary

Hawkeye #8 felt like I was reading a comedy book starring an action hero.  We have awkward moments, fighting, and humor.  Not much more I can ask for out of a monthly comic book.
