A+X #1 Review

*SPOILER FREE REVIEW*

“Captain America + Cable”
Writer:  Dan Slott
Penciler:  Ron Garney

“The Incredible Hulk + Wolverine”
Writer:  Jeph Loeb
Penciler:  Dale Keown

Marvel, never one to shy away from capitalizing on their “epic events”, has staged a couple of new series to spinoff from Avengers vs. X-Men.  AvX Consequences is the mini-series and A+X is the ongoing series.  The setup is simple…take one Avenger and one X-Man and have them team-up in short stories.  In the first issue, we have Captain America “plus” Cable, and Hulk “plus” Wolverine.  I have my doubts on whether this lasts a year (12 issues), but we shall see.

What I Liked

The surprise enemies in the Hulk plus Wolverine story.  Ron Garney and Dale Keown’s art is great to look at.  Stories are straight-forward, easy to understand.  Even if you are not familiar with the characters involved.  Both stories dealt with one central theme.  It’s a theme that a lot of the Marvel NOW! titles share in fact.  My prediction is it will be the focus of Marvel’s 2013 crossover event.  I won’t go into it now, but know that a future blog post will be written to discuss it further.

What I Didn’t Like

The opening page above sums it all.  Marvel explaining to the reader not to ask stupid questions like “Where do these stories take place in each character’s continuity?”  WHO CARES ABOUT CONTINUITY?!  Apparently Marvel doesn’t.  Not when they have these stories to get out.  All logic be damned.  It’s not like continuity would make these stories make sense right?  Making sense isn’t fun.  JUST READ THE BOOK DAMMIT!!

Going forward, we will have to see if these will be stand-alone stories featuring an Avenger and X-Man, or if A+X will tie into other ongoing titles.  What are your thoughts on this series?  Will it be successful living off of the buzz from Avengers vs. X-Men?  Let us know in our comments section below.
