The Recipe for 12/5/18

Pick of the Week (PotW):

Immortal Hulk #10 continues with the eerie and unnerving yet welcomed horror angle.  The creative team unexpectedly added a supernatural element to the Hulk and this would explain why he could see things such as Dr. Strange’s astral form.  The Hell we see in this issue is just as frightening as the hell illustrated by Clayton Crain in his Ghost Rider runs.

Coulda Been A Contender (For PotW):

Die #1 is a delectable fusion of the Dungeons & Dragon Cartoon (the cast), the Fiction/Jumanji (the plot & story & big bad (more so the Fiction)), and It (mood & atmosphere).  Kudos to Hans and Cowles for the visuals that added a certain depth to the overall story.  Even-though, it was 39 pages I still wanted more.

Killmonger #1 captured the spirit of Michael B. Jordan’s performance without falling for the trap of presenting us with a forced derivative.  Found it interesting that Bast communed with N’Jadaka and wonder if there was anything she could have done more to bring her lost son home.  King, Rook, and Knight are interesting characters and hope they get fleshed out before they leave the scene.

Worthy Mentions:

Doctor Strange #9 dug how the mundane and supernatural was blended so seamlessly.  I rather see more Strange tales along these lines because the typical strange story is tired.  Wasn’t the Ancient One consigned to Hell after the Doctor Strange Dead Girl miniseries?

Shatterstar #3 surprised that Windsong was referenced and was under the assumption that they never met despite being a mating pair.  Wonder if an unexpected scion of Shatterstar will be revealed.  Found it interesting that Sovereignshard resembled the late Prince.

Winter Soldier #1 felt like an episode of Renegade set in the Marvel Universe (which isn’t a bad thing).

Feeling Some Type of Way:

Prodigy #1 felt like Millar rode that Mary Sue/Competent Man trope til the wheels fell off.

The Meh Pile:

Uncanny X-Men #4 continues to be exceedingly boring despite the exciting elements.
