The Recipe for 8/8/18

Picks of the Week:

Fantastic Four #1 made me wish that this book dropped after the conclusion of Marvel Two-In-One since it is basically a prelude to this series.  The readers were given a very satisfying return to villainy for Dr. Doom.  It feels like the creative team might be doing something revolutionary with Doom.  I found it interesting that Jen Walters is continuing law after the recent mess she had endured.  I also enjoyed the light moments like the entire team establishing that Johnny is the best singer in the family and Wyatt confirming that he is in fact a great singer.  My only gripe with this issue is Johnny being a Mets fan at all; the Mets are a real life Great Lakes Avengers (sorry the Bronx in me is biased).

Exiles #6 reminded me of Who Framed Roger Rabbit in the sense that there is a clear distinction between the real characters like Nate and the animated characters like Lil Wolvie.  It was also nice to see them enjoy their downtime and heal after their Time Eater battle.  It was interesting to see Nate wear his armor constantly like Dr, Doom (his apparent ancestor).  Found it interesting that Clarice who fought beside a version of Magneto never informed her teammates not to have metal items around him.  Why doesn’t Nate have some sort of futuristic plastic polymer to compensate for magnetism.  I must highlight Rod Reis’ superb work on this issue; it reminds me of Phil Noto’s artwork.

Astonishing X-Men #14 shows us what Pete has been up to since his failed wedding. I must say visually a bearded Pete is the best Pete.  I am definitely surprised that Forge is handling the technical aspect of Dazzler’s show (always figured that he works for the government whenever he’s not involved in X-Men related messes).  This lineup and plot is already more interesting than the previous run. Loved that Allison had her stuff more together than the fellas, they were sloppy and in dire need of her aid.

Hawkman #3 continues to a fun read and still evokes an Indiana Jones meets Tomb Raider vibe.  I love how versatile and adaptive Carter is in a combat situation.  It proved for me that Carter doesn’t have to  be Conan the Barbarian in Wings to survive.  They set the bar high with a skirmish with a T-Rex.  They already reconciled Carter wuth Prince Khufu and curious to see how they integrate him with Wingman Hol.

Worthy Mentions:

Champion #23 provided some serious growth and development for Viv in addition to leapfrogging her understanding of humanity/emotions over her father IMO.  It also confirmed that Sam is a hero to his core.

Hunt for Wolverine – Adamantium Agenda #4 confirmed Laura’s identity in relation to Logan and established that one of the X-Men is not a true mutant.  Found that reveal comical since the X-Men have allowed folk like Cloak & Dagger, Warlock, Longshot etc on their team.  Plus how would such genetic modification get passed Beast’s biological expertise.

Amazing Spider-Man #3 threw an interesting curve ball in the Peter Parker & Spider-Man being separate entities arc.

Sideways #7 reintroduces us to the Seven Soldiers of Victory

Feeling Some Type of Way:
