Pick of the Week:

Birthright No. 26 gives a brief glimpse at the moments that led to Mikey’s defeat and eventual corruption. Found it funny that orcs he faced seemed to know the truth that was hidden from the rebels and if Mikey even knows this same truth. It also looks like Mikey’s granddad has mortal enemies as well. This world continues to be gray with no clear black or white. Mikey continues to possess some goodness despite his allegiance. The five mages were self-serving and ruthless when it suit their purpose. I am still holding out for a Lore centric issue.

Doctor Strange & the Sorcerers Supreme No. 12 revealed the true purpose of the group’s formation. I wonder if the time travel shenanigans is one of the reasons why the Ancient One picked Strange as his successor. I am delighted that Kushala and the Mindful One are still around.  This series left me with a desire to see more tales of Young Yao, Kushala, and the Mindful One. I seriously hope Kushala doesn’t get caught up in any potential Ghost Rider foolishness.

Runaways No. 1 was a clear demonstration of Chase’s undying love for Gertrude and illustration that her loss was one trauma he never overcame. I am curious about Nico’s status, are her staff, arm and power level the result of some soft retcon or some soon-to-be-explained reason. The limitations did show Nico is creative and can think on her feet.  I was hoping that she would evolve pass her verbal limitation like Alex did when he had the Staff.

Mister Miracle No. 2 cements my opinion of Orion and the position of High Father seemed to bring out his petty traits.  I couldn’t help but hear Ed Asner’s voice as Granny Goodness spoke. The readers get a sense of how warped and devious she is with her interaction with her “children.” Was surprised to see that Scott still bore the wounds from his previous attempt at ultimate freedom.

Worthy Mentions:

Hal Jordan & The Green Lantern Corps No. 28 confused me with the 4th World stuff and current DC continuity. I appreciate the most recent iteration of High Father because he’s more proactive and a warrior.

Defenders No. 5 was the usual Bendis book but the Hellstrom bit made me laugh out loud for some reason. Danny reminded me of his dimwitted Netflix iteration with his conversation with Matt.

Rocket No. 5 continue to dig this heist film is space series vibe.

Dr. Aphra No. 12 sets Rur on the path to destruction as it encounters Vader. It’s a pity that BeeTee and 000 are free agents now. I enjoyed their interaction with Aphra and the other other flesh bags.

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl No. 24 made me realize that need the Ultron T-Rex as much as I need the Venom T-Rex. Is a Mindless One T-Rex next?

The Burn Pile:

Many books were extra meh but nothing worth burning or mentioning.
