The Visitor How and Why He Stayed header

Pick of the Week:
Descender No. 19 surprised me and I am a bit disappointed in myself that I didn’t see that twist coming.  That moment between Driller and Andy was chilling.  It also showed how much Driller has grown as a character.

Ether No. 4 adds another wrinkle to the overall plot and grants the viewer an inclination of how vile the big bad is without “Fridging” the love interest to motivate the hero into action. I am a bit saddened because this means the delightful mini-series is almost over.  Dark Horse continues to offer a solid relief for readers like myself who are suffering from cape & cowl tales & rehashed ideas & mega event fatigue.

Sun Bakery No. 1 felt like a Suda51 videogame filtered through Studio Trigger.  Corey Lewis continues to be a unique soul in the comic world with his mixing of different mediums/genres into an enthralling presentation.  I hope that he eventually goes the Joe Mad route and dabbles in video games at some point.  His ideas/energy must be translated into other mediums!

Supergirl: Being Super No. 2 is everything that the current television series should be & Smallville should have been.  Kara’s core remains intact with this reimagining and her supporting cast is fleshed out and organic.  That lost was definitely tragic and tangible.

The Visitor: How and Why He Stayed No. 1 & 2 reminded me why I love the Mignolaverse.  Some many different ideas coexist/blends so masterfully and extraordinary cosmic/supernatural characters engage in such blue-collar tasks in this series.  The Visitor didn’t fall into certain alien cliques and possessed a greater humanity than most of the homo sapient characters in the story.  I also loved the Kirby vibe that was exhibited in the Visitor’s prism: it reminded me of a Mother Box.  Kudos to the creative team for grounding the Visitor and connecting him to humanity without it feeling forced and tacked on.  Especially the scene, where his wife comes home & he’s in his natural form & they have such a mundane everyday conversation.  It also added to the mythology in such way that the new content fit in organically without adding confusion.  It reminded me of Naruto mangaka, Kishimoto, in the sense that every new addition to the story broadened the grandeur and epic feel of the story.

Worthy Mentions:

The Old Guard No. 1 was more or less the result of the Highlander & Call of Duty series performing the fusion dance.  I am curious to see how the immortals deal with being exposed.

Divinity III – Stalinverse No. 3 felt like a better version of the Age of Apocalypse mega event with an unexpected development.  I don’t know how the heroes will restore things back to normal now.

The Autumnlands Vol 2 feels that barbarian/D & D filtered through modern sensibility slot that Birthright has been holding down for awhile

Revival No. 47 was a satisfying ending to a series that helped me overcome my zombiephobia.

Loose Ends No. 2 continues to make me wish to see it on television ASAP!

Revolutionaries No. 2 made the 10-year-old in me wished that this actually occurred in the late 80’s when I could appreciate it more.

Infamous Iron Man No. 5 surprised me with the end reveal and I wonder how Vic will take it when he eventually finds out.  I am glad that Ben has overcome his grudge with Vic.

Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur No. 16 delighted me that the Inhuman vs X-Men malarkey hasn’t contaminated this sweet book.  I am actually glad that she’s on good terms with the X-Folk and actually came up with a peace full solution to the mega event mess.

Occupy Avengers No. 4 was very surprised to see the character responsible Cap Wolf .is the same Tilda that was assisting Nighthawk.  She is a welcomed addition to this book.  I am glad that she is far from a damsel in distress,

The Burn Pile:

Won’t taint your beings by mentioning these offensive messes!!
