NEW SUICIDE SQUAD #17 Review

Writer:  Tim Seeley
Art and Color:  Juan Ferreyra
Letterer:  Nate Piekos of Blambot
Publisher:  DC Comics

“Suicide Squad” is in an interesting place in mainstream media.  The majority of the public will be familiar with it from the upcoming Suicide Squad film from Warner Bros.  Others will know its based on the comic book by the same name.  The Suicide Squad a.k.a. Task Force X are a group of criminals recruited by the government to go on suicide missions.  The government keeps them in line by implanting bombs in their necks/heads that can be remotely detonated.  Amanda Waller is their handler.

The Suicide Squad comic has gone through a few different iterations since the start of the New 52.  It was recently relaunched as New Suicide Squad in 2014.  Ahead of the movie, a new creative team of Tim Seeley and Juan Ferreyra have come on to give it a fresh take.

I was really impressed with Ferreyra’s art throughout the issue.  Both in his line work and colors.  The colors reminded me of an almost dream-like state.  Otherworldly yet vibrant when needed.  While there were no ultra-violent scenes to depict, the art was the strongest part of the book.

That doesn’t mean Seeley was lackluster on writing duties.  His opening installment introduced the primary characters of the Suicide Squad and the threat they’re taking on.  Mr. Ashemore goes to Amanda Waller because England is looking to implement their own version of the “Suicide Squad.”  The contrast between Waller and Ashemore was pleasant to witness.  Ashemore is a lot more cowardly than Waller, and has no qualms admitting that.

Almost every past member of the Suicide Squad was either shown or referenced by name.  Some are locked away in their cells awaiting orders.  The cast for this mission are Harley Quinn, Deadshot, El Diablo, and Cheetah.  A small but adequate number.

The mystery leading into the next issue is who are the super-powered assets that joined the skirmish between the Suicide Squad and the Ghost Dragons.  Plus the fact that it looks like Waller needs a whole new Task Force X.
