The Doktor’s Prescriptions for the New Year (1/6/16)

Pick of the Week – Doctor Strange No. 4
What I dug: Strange’s magic is less of a deus ex machina, it is more grounded like BKV attempted during his Strange miniseries. Every spell casted has a cost that ultimately adds up to a hefty toll. Loved the fans got an opportunity to see that toll as well.
What I don’t fancy: Not a thing!
Buy or Nah: BUY IT NOW!!! Get a print, digital copy! Just get it!

Pick of the Week – Invincible Iron Man No. 5
What I dug: The cover art was a red herring and had nothing to do with Doom’s actual depiction.  DOOM! DOOM! DOOM! This is the Doom that I always wanted to see.  A Victor no longer hindered by his petty obsession with Richards and confined to that iconic yet drab armor.
What I don’t fancy: Nada!
Buy or Nah: BUY IT NOW!

Pick of the Week – Paper Girl No. 4
What I dug: The overall 80’s scifi meets coming-of-age film vibe of the book! Absolutely loving the Cliff Chiang art!
What I don’t fancy: The language was bit too colorful for my tastes!
Buy or Nah: Buy it!

Pick of the Week – Weirdworld No. 2
What I dug: How Goleta doesn’t visually fall into the female barbarian category… she’s actually wearing clothes! Not a chainmail bikini or tattered rags, but actual clothes.  She’s also built like the recent iteration of Images Glory.  She also has a sweet ride. Loved that some elements from the Secret War series like the Man Thing army still exists.
What I don’t fancy: Nada!
Buy or Nah: Buy it!

A-Force No. 1
What I dug: The return of Singularity and her attempts to interact with her friends was heart warming. Loved the glimpses of the Original Alpha Flight as well.
What I don’t fancy: Nada!
Buy or Nah: Buy!

Amazing Spider-Man No. 1.2
What I dug: The Simone Bianchi art
What I don’t fancy: I found the overall story to be pretty boring. Nothing stood out to me at all.
Buy or Nah: Nah!

Black Science No. 19
What I dug: Grant’s path to closure and overcoming the horrors/demons of the past.  Unlike characters from the Big Two, Grant’s closure seems permanent.
What I don’t fancy: Nada.
Buy or Nah: Buy!

Contest of Champions No. 4
What I dug: Stick stole the show, he saved his more powerful teammates’ bacon and defeated their opponents! The return of a certain New Warrior has me excited.
What I don’t fancy: I wanted to see how exactly he took out the Sentry… feel gipped out of something epic!
Buy or Nah: Buy it!

Four Eyes No. 1
What I dug: How come place and mundane dragons are in this world.
What I don’t fancy: Guess my gripe with all period piece, the racism and racist comments.
Buy or Nah: Buy

Guardians of Infinity No. 2
What I dug: The future Guardians seemed interesting, particularly Drax’s dance partner!
What I don’t fancy: Tired of the cliche “super heroes meet for the first time, have a fight then realize they are on the same side” song and dance.
Buy or Nah: On the Fence!

Mythic No. 6
What I dug: Waterson’s battle with the Midgard Serpent’s minions was cool!
What I don’t fancy: The language was bit too colorful for my tastes!
Buy or Nah: Buy it!

Saints No. 4
What I dug: How the story incorporated elements of the Prophecy films and the Preacher comic without being overwhelmed by them.
What I don’t fancy: The art is deceptive, too cartoony for the overall heavy stuff that occurs .
Buy or Nah: BUY IT NOW!

Spider-Gwen No. 4
What I dug: This iteration of Harry Osborne is cooler than 616 Harry IMO.  I especially love the designs for the Green Goblin, the Gliders, and Hobgoblins.
What I don’t fancy: Nada!
Buy or Nah: Buy it!

Spider-Man Deadpool No. 1
What I dug: The Odd Couple vibe exhibited by Peter and Wade!
What I don’t fancy: Nada!
Buy or Nah: Buy it!

The Totally Awesome Hulk No. 2
What I dug: How anger is such an integral part of the Hulk identity and despite a specific Hulk’s level of control he or she is still vulnerable to it.  The Frank Cho art is to-die-for!
What I don’t fancy: Nada!
Buy or Nah: Buy it!

Ultimates No. 3
What I dug: They are working on fixing the temporal mess caused by frequent time travel shenanigans. I must say again that it’s nice to see Alpha Flight in a book!
What I don’t fancy: Nada!
Buy or Nah: Buy it!

Uncanny X-Men No. 1
What I dug: The return of the Dark Riders was an unexpected surprise.
What I don’t fancy: I am surprised that Betsy doesn’t get Creed back for almost killing her. Not sure why Warren is back to his Death persona, I thought the life seed erased that!
Buy or Nah: On the fence!

Vision No. 3
What I dug: The slight remix of “Vision attempting to be human” story with his creation of a wife and offspring.
What I don’t fancy: Vision is a hard character to get invested in with his frequent personality changes!
Buy or Nah: On the fence!

Woods No. 19
What I dug: The overall concept reminds me of Stephen King’s the Mist. Ordinary people adjusting and evolving in harsh circumstances to survive.
What I don’t fancy: Nada!
Buy or Nah: Buy it!

X-Men – Worst Ever No. 1
What I dug: Bailey has a Peter Parker everyman quality to him.
What I don’t fancy: Nada!
Buy or Nah: Buy it!
