“Robin War” continues, as the Court of Owls makes their play against the captured Robins.  Meanwhile, Jim Gordon and Dick Grayson investigate Councilwoman Noctua.

What I Liked

It was fun to watch Grayson and Gordon working together.  We are used to Dick working with Batman.  This time the dynamic was switched around a bit.  Yet still, it seemed flawless.  Especially since it was a quiet scene involving them using their detective skills.

I was glad they talked about Batman having a teenage partner and what Jim Gordon really thought about it.  From Gordon’s perspective, it looked like Batman putting a kid’s life at risk.  However, it reminded Jim of the child soldiers he saw overseas.

The art was provided by Carmine Di Giandomenico and Mat Lopes.  I am a fan of Giandomenico’s previous work at Marvel, and he has provided art in a couple of epilogue stories of We Are Robin.  So seeing him work on a full issue was a welcomed addition.  Giandomenico and Lopes used many different camera angles to change the eye level of the reader.  Plus, his fight sequences are filled with kinetic energy.

And speaking of fighting, we got Red Hood versus Red Robin.  The Court of Owls put them in a fight to the death in front of the captured Robins.  While they did fight, it was all a plan to setup some sweet teamwork between the two.  The all-out brawl between the Robins and the Court of Owls was the highlight of issue #7.  The bickering between Damian Wayne and Duke Thomas started things off, then we moved to Red Hood taking on Red Robin, and climaxing with the Robins’ breakout.  The excitement level kept increasing with each new development.

Finally, even though this was a minor thing, I couldn’t help but LOL at Red Hood yelling out a “YAAASSSSSSSS!”

What I Didn’t Like

I only have a few small things to nitpick.  First, Councilwoman Noctua is horrible at hiding her evil deeds.  While I’m sure Grayson and Gordon would have discovered her connection to the arresting of the Robins, having paperwork out in plain view is just careless.

Next, since when has Red Hood’s head covering been able to show his facial expressions?  I thought it was an actual helmet.  But in a few panels, you could see him smiling or raising an eyebrow.  Which would lead me to believe its a mask.  Anytime he’s been in a fight and hit square in the face, the helmet has cracked and broken into pieces.

A little more explanation was given to the Court of Owls’ obsession with the “Gray son of Gotham”.  However, for new readers, it would have helped if the explanation dug a little deeper.  I still don’t fully understand why the Court of Owls want the Nightwing to return.

Lastly, I know it is one huge group fight between the Robins and Court of Owls, but are we to believe the We Are Robin kids can really keep up with the Owls in hand-to-hand combat?
