Doktor’s Marvel Prescriptions for 10/7/15
|Pick of the Week – Dr. Strange No. 1
What I dug: Aaron’s iteration of Strange is more appealing and likeable than previous version. His rescue of an afflicted child stood out to me because I am so used to Strange battling massive threats like Mordo or Dormmamu. His supporting cast is another nice touch since Wong is his most consistent confidante. Bacholo’s art is a perfect fit for the weirdness of the book.
What I don’t fancy: My main gripe is the delay in Secret Wars creates some confusion.
Buy or Nah: BUY IT NOW!!!
All New All Different Point One No. 1
What I dug: It was a nice introduction to the next wave of Marvel books. Loved seeing HERBIE as a member of SHIELD. The art throughout the book was good.
What I don’t fancy: Nothing stands out.
Buy or Nah: Buy!
Avengers No. 0
What I dug: The overall introduction to the new Avengers book flowed well. The latest chapter of the Wanda – Vision saga was step in the Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind direction. Wade’s journey from mercenary to hero is more interesting than Logan’s journey IMO. The interdimensional lineup of Squadron Supreme has caught my eye.
What I don’t fancy: Nothing stood out.
Buy or Nah: Buy it!
Contest of Champions No. 1
What I dug: The art was the main draw.
What I don’t fancy: The concept bores me after Hickman’s Avengers and Secret Wars
Buy or Nah: Nah!
Darth Vader No. 10
What I dug: The added layer to Vader’s overall character was a nice touch. The murderous “twins” of R2D2 and C3PO are delightfully chilling.
What I don’t fancy: Nada
Buy or Nah: Buy
Iron Man No. 1
What I dug: The new suit and AI are a nice touch. I dug the reappearance of Madame and unexpected return of ******.
What I don’t fancy: My main gripe is the delay in Secret Wars creates some confusion.
Buy or Nah: Pick it up NOW!
Journey to Star Wars No. 2
What I dug: The further exploration of the universe was enjoyable. The art was a perfect fit.
What I don’t fancy: Nada!
Buy or Nah: Buy
Old Man Logan No. 5
What I dug: Logan’s interaction with variants of his friends and son was touching. The art truly conveyed the emotion of the issue.
What I don’t fancy: Nada
Buy or Nah: Buy
Secret Wars No. 6
What I dug: It’s enjoyable to see Doom’s empire unravel. The interaction between the Reed’s was sobering. 616 Reed could easily become like his ultimate variant if he lost his family
What I don’t fancy: The delay
Buy or Nah: Buy
Siege No. 4
What I dug: Thanos was the star of the book. I loved how he put a fire under Grimm.
What I don’t fancy: No, real complaint
Buy or Nah: Buy
Spider Island. 5
What I dug: The ending was enjoyable. Loved the final interaction between Flash and Pete. A Manhattan inhabited by vampires, werewolves, lizardmen, spiderfolk, Dino folk and bird people is a book I want to read!
What I don’t fancy: No, real complaint
Buy or Nah: Buy
Star Wars No. 10
What I dug: Chewie is easily the star of the book! Loved how he tore stuff up in search of Luke!
What I don’t fancy: No, real complaint
Buy or Nah: Buy
The Amazing Spider-Man No. 1
What I dug: I dug the spider gadget! I love how Slott has been establishing Peter as a man of industry. There’s no reason why he shouldn’t be a world changer like Richards, Pym, and Stark, glad that Slott has fallen in the temptation of portraying Peter as a hapless every man with bad luck.
What I don’t fancy: Nothing really, I just don’t trust Marvel to keep Peter on this successful path.
Buy or Nah: Buy
What If Infinity Inhumans No. 1
What I dug: It was interesting to see how far Blackbolt would go to save his people. The creative way they defeated Thanos was unexpected.
What I don’t fancy: The inconsistent power of Blackbolt’s scream irked me.
Buy or Nah: Buy
What If Infinity Thanos No. 1
What I dug: The concept and art were enjoyable.
What I don’t fancy: No, real complaint
Buy or Nah: Buy
