Review: DESCENDER #5

Written By:  Jeff Lemire

Published By:  Image Comics

Tim-21 and company have had a tough time the last few issues.  After waking up on a mining colony alone, save for his pet-bot Bandit and the mining-bot Driller, they were attacked by scrappers.  Tim-21 was damaged in the attack.  However, he was saved by the UGC science team coming to the rescue.

On the way back to UGC, yet another group of scrappers intercepted the crew and plan on taking them to the planet Gnish.  The home of the Robot Culls.  The scrappers plans on dissecting Tim-21 to learn of his possible link to the Harvesters.

What I Liked

There are so many layers added to the story with each issue.  Even ignoring the huge development at issue’s end, we see a spy in the United Galactic Council, a violent act of torture, and the beginnings of a bromance between robot and human.

Even though Tim-21 takes on a smaller role, it allows Jeff Lemire to flesh out the supporting characters.  Which include their scrapper captors.

Artists Dustin Nguyen and Steve Wands once again deliver a visual masterpiece through watercolors and triggering raw emotion from the reader.  You can see the fear in Tim-21’s eyes and the total disgust for humans from Driller.

And did I mention that ending?  Oh yeah, I did.  A huge development is afoot.

What I Didn’t Like

If I were to nitpick, there is less focus on Tim-21. I’m also curious to find out what his dreams of a robot graveyard were about when he was close to death/termination after suffering damage from the first group of scrappers.
