Review: SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #19
|Writer: Dan Slott
Penciler: Ryan Stegman
Inker: Livesay
Color Art: Edgar Delgado
Letterer: Chris Eliopoulos
Dan Slott has been on a roll with Superior Spider-Man. With this latest arc, he has brought Spider-Man 2099 from the future to the present. This isn’t a random pairing either. Slott found a way to plant seeds for this story and have it tie into current continuity.
Horizon Labs is filling with chronotons and is ready to explode. Spider-Man 2099 has to secure the safety of Tiberius Stone to secure his future and that of the year 2099. Also, Carlie Cooper and the vigilante Wraith are hot on the trail of uncovering Otto Octavius’ secret.
What I Liked
The major thing I liked I can’t discuss because it would be a spoiler. I will say I can’t wait to see how this new development plays out.
Slott seems to juggle at least three storylines in each comic. So much drama stuffed into every page. Otto tries to save the day and prove he is “superior”, all the business with Spider-Man 2099, and Carlie’s sleuthing. Otto may be regretting erasing Peter Parker’s consciousness after the jam he finds himself in. Something else Slott has mastered is ending each issue with more questions than answers.
What I Didn’t Like
Normally Ryan Stegman’s art would end in my “Like” section, but I will say this issue he didn’t have many chances to illustrate Spider-Man web-slinging or fighting. There was more problem-solving and resolution panels than anything else. Again, no knock on Stegman because the book still looked great as always. But compared to the previous two issues, this one would rank behind them.
Summary
This is the resolution to the Spider-Man 2099 arc. Per usual, things are not left the same as when they originally started. Plus Carlie Cooper is getting closer to discovering Otto’s secret. I’m glad Dan Slott found a way to utilize a discarded hero like Spider-Man 2099. He’s back in the spotlight and now fans and readers have a reason to want more of him. Hopefully we get our wish in the future.
