Review: Superior Spider-Man #14

Writer:  Dan Slott
Penciler:  Humberto Ramos
Inker:  Victor OLazaba
Color Art:  Edgar Delgado
Letterer:  Chris Eliopoulos

Otto Octavius has been a busy man.  After expelling the last remnants of Peter Parker’s spirit, Otto has most recently defeated the Spider-Slayer.  Otto has blackmailed Mayor Jameson and has a new compound to work out of.  Now Otto has set his sights on Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin and ruler of Shadowland.

What I Liked

Things seem to get crazier and crazier inside the pages of Superior Spider-Man.  Dan Slott is juggling about three to four different villains for Otto.  There are dangling plot threads for Kingpin, Hobgoblin, Jackal and Green Goblin.  Some are even crossing over into the others.  None of it is confusing to keep up with, and its even making the comic more enjoyable.

Slott has Octavius displaying his “superior” intellect in ways that Peter never did.  Otto is being proactive; targeting his enemies and formulating plans to stop them before going into combat.  Otto makes a great point to Jameson….why hasn’t anyone tried to rid Hell’s Kitchen of Shadowland?  He is making the most of his second chance at life, even if some of his methods may be extreme.  Kingpin and Hobglobin even provide moments of comedy relief.  It almost makes me want to see a series surrounding the two of them.

I love Spider-Man’s new costume.  The red and black work well together.  Kudos goes to whoever designed it.  The finger claws seem to be missing from this version.

What I Liked

I am a fan of Humberto Ramos’ art, but there were a few panels of action sequences that were hard to follow.  Spider-Man’s body was twisted in some weird angles.  Along with all the Hand ninjas, I couldn’t tell what was happening at times.

Summary

Next issue appears to be more of Spider-Man versus Hobgoblin.  Otto has been eliminating every opponent he’s come up against.  Could Hobgoblin be next on the chopping block?  Plus we still have to find out what evil scheme Green Goblin is cooking up.  Superior Spider-Man #14 was a fun addition to Superior Spider-Month.
