Review: Savage Wolverine #6

*SPOILER-FREE REVIEW*

Writer:  Zeb Wells
Artist:  Joe Madureira
Colorist:  Peter Steigerwald
Letterer:  VC’s Cory Petit

Savage Wolverine appears to be the Wolverine title that allows rotating creative teams to come in and tell Wolverine stories and not be bogged down by continuity.  Savage Wolverine #6 even lets the reader know this on it’s introductory page.  Joining the creative team are Zeb Wells and Joe Madureira.  This is Madureira’s first Marvel work since he helped launch Avenging Spider-Man, also with Zeb Wells.

What I Liked

It’s great seeing Madureira back on a monthly series, even if it’s only for a few issues.  I grew up collecting Uncanny X-Men during Madureira’s run on it back in the 90’s.  His art is still as manga-influenced as ever.  Especially eye-catching is his Spider-Man.  It’s hard to convey emotions with a character in a mask, but Madureira is able to display emotion through simple body language.

As much as readers complain about continuity in their comics, it can be refreshing to read a book and not have to worry about where it fits in with all the other monthly titles.  Sometimes we just want to see Wolverine be a badass and hack & slash ninjas.

Savage Wolverine is a great format to have Wolverine interact with a rotating cast of guest-stars.  Similar to Avenging Spider-Man.  Here Wolverine is teamed with Elektra to take on The Hand, who is being led by Wilson Fisk, The Kingpin.

Zeb Wells finds a unique reason to have Elektra and Wolverine pairing together.  Especially with the twist at the end.  Let’s just say Wolverine believes he’s being asked to do one thing, when it’s really another.

What I Didn’t Like

My main gripe is that Madureira won’t be staying on to provide art fulltime.  We need more comics illustrated by him.

Oh, and I know Elektra is a ninja and sneakily getting around places is par for the course.  But how is she able to scale Avengers Tower and not set off any alarms?

Summary

Wolverine vs ninjas.  That’s what we have to look forward to in this second Savage Wolverine arc.  This issue was light on action, but that is sure to pick up next issue.  At least we get to see Wolverine back in his classic brown and yellow costume!
