Uncanny Avengers takes a slight detour to tie into the Marvel event Age of Ultron.  Even though it’s a tie-in issue, issue 8AU still ties into the main Uncanny Avengers story involving Kang the Conqueror and the Apocalypse Twins.  We get to see this family dynamic in action, even though it takes place in an alternate timeline.

What I Liked

For the most part, I’ve been skipping the Age of Ultron tie-in books.  I’m barely enjoying the main series, so why would I read the tie-ins?  After hearing Rick Remender say that issue #8AU would also be integral to the main Uncanny Avengers story, I decided to give it a try.  And I am glad I did.

The story deals with Kang sending the Apocalypse Twins (Uriel and Eimin) to the Age of Ultron for some training on how to kill their foes.  Kang has abducted the Apocalypse Twins so he can twist them with his teachings.  In every possible future they have been a threat to him, so what better way to eliminate a threat than to make them a pawn?

We get to see the different personalities of Uriel and Eimin.  Uriel the overeager son, Eimin the patient, wiser older sister.  Both appear to be young kids here.  I can’t remember if in our regular timeline they are older or if they are kids as well.  Something to keep an eye on going forward.

Remender did a fine job of flipping the Havok/Cyclops dynamic by having Cyclops be the Summers brother up on a pedestal and Havok being the one fighting the mutant species.

What I Didn’t Like

Only downside is this ties into Age of Ultron, which is one big “What If?” story.  Only characters of consequence are Kang and the Apocalypse Twins.

Summary

Uncanny Avengers has been a fun book the last five issues.  The pace has picked up and there is drama with each month’s book.  Even though this had to tie into Age of Ultron, it is still essential reading for fans of Uncanny Avengers as we learn some backstory of the Apocalypse Twins.
