BOOM! Studios Supurbia #2 Review

Created and Written By:  Grace Randolph
Art By:  Russell Dauterman
Colors By:  Gabriel Cassata

ALL PRAISE THE RECAP/INTRODUCTION PAGE!!!  One of the complaints I had with issue one of Supurbia was that there was not a recap/introduction page for new readers.  There are so many characters to become familiar with, it made it hard to know one from another.  So this is much appreciated.

Issue two takes the “less is more” approach, by focusing on fewer members of the cast.  Hella Heart gets questioned by the government on a list of her victims, while Hayley Harper continues to try and reveal to the public that Hella is living with Sovereign.  Hayley is still a lover scorned.

The story of the Metzger family seems to be the most compelling early on.  Obviously Batu comes from another planet/dimension, and her offspring have the capability to possess great power.  And her youngest son, Eli, wants to learn the ways of the “Bright Moon”.  But will he be given the chance?

The love triangle between Night Fox/Agent Twilight/Alexis Fritsche gets even more complicated when Alexis and Night Fox’s weapons supplier Jake Weintraub dodge attackers and share a kiss.

What I Liked

The art by Russell Dauterman once again is a joy to look at.  It is aided by the colors from Gabriel Cassata.  Everything is bright and vibrant.  The tribe that Batu comes from reminds me of the Amazons from the Wonder Woman comic book.  They have a strict code that they adhere to.  I am curious to learn how Eli was able to best his mother, Batu.  But I seem to recall issue one mentioning that Eli beat his sister, Sara.  Maybe I am not remembering things correctly.

Night Fox and Agent Twilight’s relationship appears to be coming to an end.  More likely it transitions to the next stage, where things could get ugly for the pair post-breakup.

The flashback sequence with Jeremy Metzger was nice to see.  It shows how the Meta Legion’s transportation portal works, and how Jeremy uses it for himself to travel to the land of Bright Moon.

What I Didn’t Like

Yes, Supurbia is a soap opera involving super-powered individuals.  So it makes sense that it would concentrate more on the drama than the action.  Being a fan of superhero comics, however, makes this a slow book to read.  I just enjoy seeing action in my comic books.  It doesn’t make Supurbia any less of a book.  It all comes down to knowing what you are getting into when jumping into a new title.

I also do not know who the individual is who appears to be watching everything unfold in Hell.  He is not concentrating on any one character.  Maybe he is an enemy to the Metal Legion from one of the previous volumes.

In closing, it appears Grace Randolph will take the next few issues to show showcase the story of the Meta Legion, only a few at a time.  If I were to guess, the Metzger and Sovereign/Hella Heart plots will continue since they seem to be front and center.
