Why I Love Comic Books

Growing up, I remember my first comic books being X-Force #1 (penciled by Rob Liefeld) and X-Men #1 (penciled by Jim Lee).  Both issues were released at the same time.  Opening those books, I was awed at the tremendous artwork by both men. It wasn’t until I was older did I realize how limited and horrible Liefeld really was.

Anyway, the reason for this post is because last week I had some conversations on Twitter and Google+ that revolved around comic books. People were sharing which characters or teams they liked/disliked.  I know there are thousands of people who enjoy comic books, but it was refreshing to see so many of the people I converse with sharing their love of comics also.

The main books I started collecting were Amazing Spider-Man, Uncanny X-Men, X-Men, X-Force, and New Warriors.  I stuck mainly to Marvel books, especially anything in the X-Universe.  I believe the X-Men Animated Series even debuted sometime after I was collecting, which made watching the show even more enjoyable. Looking back, what intrigued me about the X-Men was this diverse team of individuals who all had different powers, and all did not get along.  It’s been said many times, but the X-Men really are a family. Not every family member gets along, and the same can be said for X-Men.

A great comic book can mirror a novel, with the added bonus that there are images to go along with the story.  Storylines can take twists and turns which can make you always stay on your toes.  There could be a throwaway scene or line that comes into play 10 issues later.

In future posts I will dedicate time to breakdown and discuss my favorite comic book characters and books in more depth.  I hope you all join in the conversation by leaving comments, and let me know what comic books and characters you enjoy/dislike as well.
