Rey Mysterio: The Life of A Masked Man Review

Rey Mysterio:  The Life Of a Masked Man DVD Review

By Adam Black

WWE released the third DVD set dedicated to their high flying superstar Rey Mysterio.  Rey is interviewed by Matt Striker as he introduces various matches spanning his nearly twenty year career.    I must say that I generally do not like this type of WWE superstar video because I prefer the interview being on one disc while the matches are on another disc.  This set is actually pretty decent especially if you are a Rey Mysterio fan.

As usual this set features matches that were left off of Rey’s previous two videos.  There were some pretty awesome matches from Monday Nitro with Eddie Guerrero and Chris Jericho.  Of course, WWE wants you to believe that Rey did not wrestle from the year 2000 to his Smackdown debut in 2002.  (That’s because he was not wearing a mask kids!  Try and keep up.)  I hate that because there was an awesome match where Rey took on Billy Kidman for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship on Nitro but because that match featured a mask less Rey it might as well not exist.  Billy Kidman—a wrestler that had the charisma of a door stop but always had kick ass theme music.

The interview portion of the video I found insightful.  When I saw that Matt Striker was doing the interviewing I groaned but found that he actually did a good job.  I got a sense that Matt and Rey were good friends.  Matt got Rey to open up about Eddie, his masks, and even his tattoos.   I especially liked when he talked about his family and how he spends time when he’s not in an arena wrestling.  There are more recent matches where Rey took on Dolph Ziggler, Batista, John Morrison, and Cody Rhodes (from this year’s Wrestlemania).

WWE did not provide too many special features for this disc.  Two parts of the interview that did not make it to the main video are featured on the third disc as special features.

Overall I will have to give Rey Mysterio:  The Life of A Masked Man three stars out of five.  Since this was a sit down interview DVD I would have preferred the interview to be on one disc with some match highlights woven into it.  The remaining discs could be reserved for the full matches.
