Captain America The First Avenger Review

As the final piece to The Avengers 2012 movie, I was extremely looking forward to seeing Captain America:  The First Avenger.  Honestly I was more worried about Thor succeeding with audiences than Captain America.  The general public can relate more to Captain America, who besides being given a “super-serum” is one of us, than a God named Thor.

I’m not one to give a breakdown of every act of a movie, so I’ll hit the readers up with my general thoughts. I saw Captain America in 2D, but I had read from someone that the 3D up-conversion was done nicely. There were only a handful of scenes that I could tell with my naked eye were intended for 3D, and it was only a few action scenes and maybe the last 5 minutes.

I enjoyed Chris Evans as Steve Rogers.  When Evans was first casted as Captain America there was some concern on the Internet  since Evans mostly played the jokester in other comic book movies like Fantastic Four and The Losers.  I never thought of Evans as an overtly built person, but he definitely hit the weight-room for this role.  The actress playing Peggy Carter was attractive in a 1950’s sort of way.  Not a surprise, but Tommy Lee Jones was the source of many jokes with his dry and quick delivery.  He just sounds like a military official.

Why Marvel Studios decided not to call the Howling Commandos the “Howling Commandos” I’ll never know. I’m not real familiar with Captain America’s running buddies, which is why I was shocked to see Derek Luke as one of them.  I didn’t realize the team had a black member.  I will be doing a Wikipedia search to read up on them.

It was a welcomed sight to see Hugo Weaving showing off Red Skull’s, well, red skull for the majority of the movie.  They debuted his true face about halfway through the movie, and the makeup for it was top notch.

My only gripe would be the action scenes where Captain America was fighting HYDRA agents went by way to fast.  Not the actual fighting, but the camera was moving too fast for my liking.  It was hard to savor every fist and shield thrown by Cap. That is probably more a function of the director Joe Johnston wanting to emphasis Roger’s super-serum giving him enhanced reflexes.

Now all we have to look forward to for Marvel movies is next year’s The Avengers release.  The teaser trailer shown after the credits for Captain America gave quick glimpses of all the main players.  I must admit the geek in me was trying to take in every shot of Black Widow, Hawkeye, Thor, Iron Man, and Nick Fury.  This year Thor and Captain America were the appetizers.  Next year The Avengers is the main course.

I liked the movie… Marvel Studios sticks to ultimate storyline

    • I enjoyed it too.  It’s still trying to get use to Chris Evans as Steve Rogers.  For some reason when I think of Captain America I think of an older actor.  Probably because technically he should be an old/dead man by now.
