Earth Strong Prescription for 1/18/2017

Invincible Iron Man 3 cover header

Picks of the Week:

Descender No.18 showed the result of TIM-21’s baptism by fire.  His encounter with his “evil twin” caused him to gain & lose so much.

Horizon No. 7 explained how our heroes got to earth and what they left behind.  It revealed so much yet raised even more questions.

Invincible Iron Man No. 3 gave us Tony as a mentor but without the ulterior motive and agenda.  It is rare to see altruism without ego.  There was a nice moment between RiRi & Pepper.

Squadron Supreme No. 15 gave a rare satisfying end, even with the timey wimey mechanics that brought back Aqua-Jerk.

Superman No. 15 reminds me of every Grant Morrison Superman story, particularly the Final Crisis & Multiversity elements.

The Few No. 1 surprised me.  It feels like a mix of the Road, Escape from LA, the Road, & Mad Max but tweaked to the point that it has a unique flavor.

Ultimates 2 No. 3 completely floored me.  The creative team has done amazing things with Marvel cosmology. This issue is no different, the unexpected fusion and the resultant gestalt entity is the new apex/top dog. Wonder if this new development will entice the One-Above-All to act. He has be absent for quite awhile, relegating the management of the multiverse to the Living Tribunal.

Worthy Mentions:

Amazing Spider-Man No. 23 & The Clone Conspiracy No. 16 showed how the best laid scheme can easily go up the creek.  Some of Ben’s comments were cringe worthy, I wonder if the same despicable traits exist within Pete.

Black Widow No. 10 elevated one foe to a viable treat and cleared others off the board completely.  I wonder how much longer Old Fury will be “cursed” since the cosmic dynamics have changed.  It would be funny if he fills the perceived void left by Galactus’ change.  He snuffed out lives without regard for what he saw as the greater good.

Cage! No. 4 makes me wonder why Adult Swim and Marvel aren’t making this already.

Cave Carson has a Cybernetic Eye No. 4 reminded me of Disney’s Atlantis on Acid, which is a good thing.

Chew Vol 12 TP delivers an absurd but equally entertaining. Who would have thought that phage-based powers would lead to compelling story.

Doctor Aphra No. 3 showed that Chewie has competition, serious competition. The droid duo is always a delight to see.

Green Lanterns No. 15 was refreshing to see a hero with PTSD who isn’t treated like a pariah.

Justice League vs Suicide Squad No. 5 & Justice League No. 13 gave us a cautionary tale about using ancient entity to achieve world peace & order.

Monsters Unleashed No. 1 makes me feel extra sorry for the people of earth, they experienced invading mermen, alien invaders, regular cape ruckus, hungry space gods, zombies, and now giant monsters.

Nightwing No. 13 has to be the most solid & consistent bat book.

Raven No. 5 continues to establish Raven outside of the Titans.

Red One Book 2 felt like a campy & satirical mix of Danger Girls & Avengers.

Revolutionaries No. 1 felt like the X-Men Gold team to compliment GI Joes’ Blue team.  It’s interesting to see a Transformer who thinks he’s a man.

Spider-Gwen No. 16 makes me think interdimensional travel is the new time travel.  It also reminds us that this Kingpin has to be the coolest.

Star-Lord No. 2 reminds me of the Venture Bros especially the banter.

Trinity No. 5 feels in some pieces that make some serious sense now. Also nice to see another side of Poison Ivy.

U.S. Avengers No. 2 gave a surprisingly campy villain in the form of the Golden Skull.  He reminds me of Cobra Commander from the 80’s cartoon.

Uncanny Inhumans No. 18 makes me wonder how that solution escaped Medusa & Black bolt.

The Burn Pile:

Won’t taint your beings by mentioning these offensive messes
