birthright_20-1

Pick of the Week:

Birthright No. 20 left me speechless.  A bit more of Lore is revealed and his relationship to one of the mages.  It makes me wonder his true connection to Mikey as a result.  I am not sure how I feel about the prophecy revelation and its connection to the mages.

Descender No. 16 made me feel for Driller more with the full revelation of his past.  The cast as a whole has been through hell and have been scarred/damaged as a result.  It also illustrates humanity’s tendency to be callous and cruel to others.

Doctor Strange and the Sorcerers Supreme No. 1 has an interesting cast that raised many questions.  How powerful is a supreme spirit of vengeance? Why is a reality warper a supreme? Is that the same Billy from A vs X?

The Flash No. 9 had a touching and heartfelt moment between the Wally’s.  Overall this series made me a fan of Barry.  Wally was the Flash I remember and grew up reading.

Invisible Republic No. 12 gave some clues to how Maia became the strange alien dog whisperer.  I appreciate the creative team’s effort is creating such a detail world from the main characters to the background characters.  The Traditionalist is an interesting faction that I would love to learn more about.  Maia’s innocence, optimism and naivety in such harsh circumstances is refreshing.

Lake of Fire No. 3 feels like Attack the Block set in Medieval Times with a broader scope.  It makes me wonder if this close encounter would flavor the supernatural lore and traditions of that region.

Seven to Eternity No. 2 intrigues me with the unique mixture of alien landscape and weird west.  I was caught off guard by the sudden shift in power dynamics.

Vision No. 12 convinced me that Hank Pym is cursed and his curse extends to his “descendants”.  Two of his “grandsons” suffered greatly from the curse.  Why can’t Vision have good things? Guess Vision’s perseverance in attaining happiness is commendable.

Worth the read:

Action Comics No. 966 illustrated what a great husband and dad Pre-Nu52 Clark is.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D No. 10 made me wonder if TV Gemma will receive the same upgrade.  The most interesting bit was the banter about Hill and Coulson.  I am still annoyed that Ward is still around.

All-New, All Different Avengers No. 15 was unexpectedly funny in the scene begged Heimdall for a solid so he can look cool in front of his new friends.

Batgirl No. 4 provides tons of martial arts action but the actual story feels a bit weak.

Batman Beyond No. 1 made me wish that the focus was on a different villain or derivative villain cult.  I am experiencing Joker fatigue.  Outside of the fatigue it was an interesting start and surprised me in the sense that the Jokerz gave Terry some serious trouble.

Blue Beetle No. 2 seems like teenage hormones and alien armor still don’t mesh well.  At least it is less verbal about the hormonal reactions.

Captain America – Steve Rogers No. 6 makes me wonder the Hydra Cap’s we saw in alternate reality stories were not as dangerous or formidable as this Cap.

Deadpool No. 21 reminds me of the previous storyline where Wade went against his misshapen evil clone.

Deathstroke No. 5 made me appreciate Robin more.  I had no idea he was so savage and snarky.  It also a perfect illustration of how driven and ruthless Slade is.

Detective Comics No. 943 caught me off guard.  I always assumed that Jean Paul Valley was dead and replaced by another Azrael.  Looks like Bruce is in need of another positive light to help him navigate through the darkness.

Extraordinary X-Men No. 15 impressed me with this new seductive evil variant of Apocalypse. He is no longer loudly preaching genetic superiority, he’s now whispering in your ear and promising your heart’s desire.

Frostbite No. 2 seems like it would make an awesome movie or series.  Can’t recall many frozen dystopian tales.

Future Quest No. 6 makes me wish that Future Quest would get animated.  It’s like the kid in me is freaking out with geeky overload.

Habitat TP has space cannibals and was interesting in the sense that the cannibals were only aesthetically primitive and had access to advanced technology.

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps No. 7 is another personal reminder why Guy rocks.  He’s no longer the blowhard that Bats had to put down.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur No. 12 makes me wonder how this reveal will play out in the long run.  Will Luna join the Future Foundation or new Illuminati where her intellect could be put to good use.

Ms. Marvel No. 12 was a nice palate cleanser from the Civil War II mess.

New Avengers No. 17 seemingly laid the foundation for another multiversal convergence… Secret Wars 3.  I also wonder the logic in leaving the Maker alive, such an amoral monster needs to be eliminated.

Nighthawk No. 6 reminded me of the Boondocks for some reason.  The end was poetic on some level.

Poe Dameron No. 7 made me curious about Suralinda and her species.

Prince of Cats TP is a very unique remix of Romeo and Juliet.  It feels like an old samurai flick remixed with an 80’s party film almost like House Party meets Akira Kurosawa.

Prowler No. 1 makes me wonder if Hobie will make it out of this Spider Event alive.  I am surprised that Madame Web would be in leagues with Jackal.

Silver Surfer No. 7 surprised me in the sense that I never expected to see Norrin go to a space casino and actually gamble.

Skybourne No. 2 is more or less a showcase of Cho’s talent and artistic strength.  It reminded me of his previous work with Loeb.

Spider-Man Deadpool No. 10 presented an action packed and Venture Bros-esque remix of My Two Dads (I just showed my ages).

Star Wars No. 24 finally showed the elite Stormtrooper squad in action after months of advanced previews.

Suicide Squad No. 5 delighted me to see at least one military type smart enough to see the potential danger is using a monster as a tool.  Figured the Wall would learn her lesson by now.

Teen Titans No. 1 revealed how damaged Damien is in his interaction with the team and reminded the Teen Titans vs Justice League animated film.

The Punisher Annual No. 1 was satisfying in the sense Frank is punishing domestic terrorists.  It was strangely noble that Frank spared the grieving son from tarnishing himself by ending Nicky.

The Totally Awesome Hulk No. 11

Venom – Space Knight No. 13 had an unexpected funny moment with Flash being informed that Space Pandas don’t kiss.  It is sad on some level that Flash is grounded on earth but it is great that previous storylines are addressed.

Wonder Woman No. 9 confused me a bit with the pick and choose aspect of this amalgamated continuity.  Hopefully it will be fleshed out more in future issues.

Nah, Just Nah:

Doctor Strange – Mystic Apprentice No. 1, Guardians of the Galaxy No. 13, Titans No. 4, & Ultimates No. 12 were meh

Civil War II No. 6 irked me with the unnecessary baggage and grief Marvel’s Minority Report placed in Miles’ life.
